NIC Data Transfer Rate questions
« on: August 07, 2009, 06:56:43 PM »
Hello guys, good morning. :)

I'm from Philippines. Just wanna ask these
1. What's the purpose of Data Transfer Rate in my NIC?
2. Does Data Transfer Rate has to do with my Internet Speed or the Data Transfer Rate is for transferring files only via network?
3. Does the Data Transfer Rate increase the bandwidth of my Internet?

Hope someone can explain my noob questions.

Thanks and God bless. :)

The data transfer is a function of your NIC.  What numbers are you concerned about?  What program is showing those numbers to you?

Hello Sir Quantos! Thanks for replying my topic.

My NIC Realtek has a 1000Mbps data transfer rate. I didn't use any program. When I'm connected to the Internet it says in the Notification Area that I have a 100Mbps.

So my questions are:
1. What's the purpose of Data Transfer Rate in my NIC?
2. Does Data Transfer Rate has to do with my Internet Speed or the Data Transfer Rate is for transferring files only via network?
3. Does the Data Transfer Rate increase the bandwidth of my Internet?

Thanks and God bless. ;)

Hello Sir Quantos! Thanks for replying my topic.

First off I've never been knighted.

1. What's the purpose of Data Transfer Rate in my NIC?
It shows you what your maximum available is.

2. Does Data Transfer Rate has to do with my Internet Speed or the Data Transfer Rate is for transferring files only via network?
It can tell you what your maximum rate could be, but you will never achieve that.

3. Does the Data Transfer Rate increase the bandwidth of my Internet?
No, the internet bandwidth will increase your Data Transfer Rate.  The more you pay for the more you will get, but keep in mind, you are always limited by the website that you are accessing, that means that if they are overused your connection will be slow.

Hello Sir!

Ahh ok, so it won't increase the bandwidth. For my number two question Sir, since I'm newbie when it comes to networking. It seems you didn't get the thought of my question. Does the Data Transfer Rate is for transferring files only via network?

Thanks again Sir and God bless. :)

You can quit calling me sir anytime now.

Data Transfer is mostly applicable to file transfers, but also applies to the rate at which you receive pages.

Hello Quantos! Sorry for calling you "Sir".

Ahh ok, could you give an example about this phrase "but also applies to the rate at which you receive pages."?

Thanks and God bless. :)

your Network circuitry can handle gigabit speeds (1000mbps)

but it says 100mbps in your notification area because that is the speed your router/modem is capable of.

The network circuitry is used for both network and internetwork transfers; If you have a router then this routes internet traffic to the proper target machine on your network, and each PC can communicate with one another.

the maximum speed of a network transfer is the lowest speed of the network cards of each PC as well as the router itself. in my case, for example, my desktop is capable of 1000mbps, and my wireless laptop is capable of 300mbps. My router is capable of gigabit speeds. in this case network transfers between my laptop and my desktop will be limited by the laptop, which can vary (since it's wireless).

between my two gigabit enabled desktops speeds can approach 500mb/s for transfers between the two. However this is only for direct transfers of data; this speed is of course limited by hard disk speeds during transfers of files/folders between shared drives.

I can't give you an example of it, I'm not sure how.

It also effects how fast you download webpages.  I don't know how else to state it.

PS - Please stop asking God to bless me, I'm Pagan.

That would depend on the NIC, not all of them support gigabit.

@Quantos
Ahh ok...But I got a question again. Does the Turbo Mode in wireless router improve or boost the signal?

Because my friend has a Edimax wireless router which has a Turbo Mode feature. I forgot the model, sorry for that.

No, that won't boost the signal.  When it's disabled it probably cripples the signal.
