Icons dont show up on desktop

When I start up my computer, the icons dont show up on the desktop....any help?

R-click on your Desktop

Point to "Arrange Icons by"

Click on "Show Desktop Icons"

When I right click nothing comes up.  All that is shown is just my wallpaper.  Thanks for trying though.

It looks involved but it's really straight forward basically it's saying to find the hidden file (shelliconcache), delete it & reboot to rebuild it.
Give it a good read.

Thanks once again for the help...but NOTHING shows up my screen but the wallpaper.  No icons, start toolbar, or anything else.

The same exact thing is happening to me and my Windows XP. We have recently downloaded Mozilla for its pop up protection {we had a ton before it} and I'm thinking it was a virus thats done this but I got Spybot and it said everything is ok.  Its driving me crazy though, I can't upload pictures or make a new account or find my control panel. Been working out of Windows Task Manager for the past week and done System Restore twice.

reboot-pc......hold down the f8 key.......chose  msdos prompt A:\>     now type either   scanreg/fix          or scanreg/restore         after the prompt......
