sound disappears when playing online multiplayer games

Sometimes when I play a game (Age of Empires on cd in particular) with others online the sound will be there at the start, but then disappears as I progress into the game.

Other than not being able to use my microphone in chat programs, this is the only problem I have with sound.

Would anyone have any clues here please?

Disregard that post and don't click the link. It's spam. I've already flagged it and hopefully one of the mods will remove it quickly.

As for your issue, can you provide a complete list of your hardware?

Is Age of Empires the only one you're having trouble with? Do you have any problem with sound when just playing single player? Have you downloaded the latest patch for the game as well?
