I suggest start over just so you know it's the board...
Re-install the MBoard chipset drivers...
Remove the addon cards.
Re-install the Ethernet driver and all other neccessary drivers.
Re-boot.
Install the newer card and install it's drivers.

If all this fails then you can RMA the board.

    1.  Start Over.  Don't know where you're at.  I agree with "Patio" - start over.  My preference would be that you reinstall the operating system (not sure if Patio meant just start with motherboard and driver reinstallation), but you're going to do whatever you do.

    2.  Hint(s):
         a.  The inability to establish an "Internet" connection does not necessarily mean the network interface card (NIC) is bad.  Perhaps that's just "a bridge too far" to quote an old war film.  Start with something "simpler" and closer to home, like "pinging" yourself or a "local" node.
         b.  More diagnostic information would be helpful.  Phrases such as "nothing worked" and "didn't work" beg for more detail.  Please post the "exact" error or informational messages received.
         c.  From within system BIOS, disable interfaces you're not using to "free" up resources (IRQs, I/O, DMA, Memory); e.g Serial, Parallel, Floppy Drive.

I found the boards Ethernet Utility.  It didn't tell me anything I didn't know.
Anybody want to buy a barely used board, cheap?

I will start the bid at $7

    (Bids must whole dollar amounts.)

I tried the pinging that you suggested in previous posts.  A and B were fine.  I don't have a cable to run C.  There were no IRQ conflicts.  I'll try the link and post what happens.

An fYI   I had this same problem with two IBM  Netvistas  that I've worked with.  I would install the correct drivers from IBM,  Xp said the drivers were there but no connection.  I'd uninstall and do it again.  no connection.  I finally installed a Linksys card.   For some reason (and this was on both pc's)  installing an ethernet card makes the onboard ethernet work.    I have no idea why.   So now both pc's list two ethernet choices.  ??

            1.  Test Configuration.
                 a.  Are you using the desktop computer's onboard LAN connection?
                 b.  Is its TCP/IP properties set for "manual" or "automatic" assignment (of IP address, subnet mask, gateway address, DNS server addresses)?
                 c.  Is the desktop connected directly to the modem?
                 d.  Is there a home router available to place between the desktop and the modem for your broadband connection?
                 e.  Is this a DSL or cable broadband connection?
                 f.  Did your ISP register the MAC address of the "node" connected to the modem when your broadband service was first established?  In other words will ISP only permit access if the node connected to modem presents "that" MAC address?

            2.  Ping.  Try to reach some internet sites via "ping".
                 a.  ping www.computerhope.com
                 b.  ping 69.72.169.241

                 c.  ping www.eff.org
                 d.  ping 64.147.188.10

"1  f.  They said all I have to do is cycle the power on the cable modem."

Arrrrggghhh!  When I got on line with my ISP tech support, they said that to switch computers, you have cycle the power on the cable modem for 30 seconds.  As soon as I did this, everything worked.

I was switching from my laptop to the desktop and not cycling the cable modem.

Thanks to dahlarbear and everybody else for sticking this one out.

What's funny, I'm the vehicle network expert at one of the Asian OEMs.  I'm the guy that Canada, US, Mexico, and recently Europe goes to for help.  Computer networking and Ethernet is a whole new ball game for me.

                  1.  Well done...  And with ISP tech support...  Good to know.  I did not know about the "30 second" rule.  Upon rereading the thread I see that "Broni" also mentioned a thirty second power off.

                  2.  Home Router.  I'd set it up.  Being on a home network behind a router offers more protection than a direct interface to the internet.  You can use a "private" network address range and utilize the hardware firewall component (firmware) found in most home routers.  It also permits multiple computers concurrent access to the internet.  And if desired, you could setup file and printer sharing within your home network.
