can't backup program from xp to vista

I have a 2003 Goldmine program on an old dell laptop with xp operating system.  I would like to transfer the file via a stick into my new laptop with a vista operating system.  I backed it up to a stick but the info wont transfer into the  loaded goldmine program with the vista system.  Can anyone please tell me if this will work and how i can make this happen.

Programs cannot be simply copied from 1 machine to another and be expected to run...
They need to be installed.
