CB. Yeah, I understand your frustration. I don't want to sound sarcastic so please understand I am just stating facts. Software in the vertical market, for some special business like a boatyard, bicycle shop, etc. might cost $75,000 with a required yearly service contract of $25,000 or more. With that in mind, $1000 is a bargain. (I think the package you had was the "suite.") Programmers earn at least $50K per year, and there are whole teams of them working on sections of a program as complex as PhotoShop. Marketing is expensive--magazine ads costing $50K or much more, each, one issue. There are more expenses (overhead, insurance, etc.). That's why CS3 costs $600 or so. (I think Lightroom took two years to develop, an expensive proposition.)
If you are a student you get discounts. It pays to study. The high price is motivation to get a job that pays enough to afford these wonderful "toys."
