IE slips further as Firefox, Safari, Chrome gain

The amount of market share commanded by Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser has dropped for the seventh consecutive month.

Internet Explorer now has 67.55 percent of global browser market share, a drop of over seven percentage points in a year, according to figures from Web metrics company Net Applications, released Monday. Mozilla's Firefox browser, meanwhile, has gained market share in the same time frame, climbing over three percentage points to 21.53 percent.

In short, the European Commission may force PC users to choose between Microsoft's
Internet Explorer and other browsers when they set up a new machine.
No more lock of IE on every PC. Netscape started this fight years ago.

Obviously all those statistics are not bullet-proof, but, IF let's say, the above table is accurate, January 2009 marks some historic moment, when IE share (IE6 + IE7) - 44.2%, fell below FF share - 45.4, for the first time ever.

I think users should have the right to choose between IE and Firefox (and other browsers) and/or both during the default installation of Windows. Would be really helpful. I know some users seem to believe that they can only have one browser on the computer at a time. So that could clear up that confusion. For those interested below is the most recent Google Analytic Computer Hope stats on browsers.
