BIOS PC Health Status - System Fan Speed???
« on: July 17, 2007, 06:59:49 AM »
I've had a lot of problems with my PC rebooting and dumping physical memory. After checking for bad sectors, etc. I went to the BIOS and found the problem is the CPU temperature exceeding the Shutdown temperature. However, I'm now a little confused about the PC Health Status information!

The CPU and System temperature are displayed, as is the CPU fan speed, but the System fan speed is 0 RPM. I can hear the system fan working, so I don't understand why it's registering 0 RPM in the BIOS.

Any idea?

Allot off fans don't actually report their speed to the bios , i know the fan in MY PC say 0 rpm as well.. and as far as i can tell its all hooked up right :) as my PC's never over heated

It may also be reported in the wrong place some time you have a CPU fan speed and a system fan speed, not all systems have both so if your system only has one fan on the Mother board and you do had a speed next to the system fan speed, it may actually be the CPU fan

please do not take this the wrong wqay but are you sure that there is a system fan, and you are not mistaking the sound of the psu fan, or even the cpu fan.

Any fans that are not the CPU fan, ie Chassis fans, may not be connected to the motherboard. Instead they are connected directly to the power supply and therefore the motherboard has no way of finding out it's RPM. I'm not sure if this is the case but it's likely and is true for my PC.

The first thing to try is to Clean your Computer!

Also, try booting into the BIOS and then leaving it at the monitoring screen for at least 30mins. Then you will get a good idle temp. Please post this. Also your CPU model as different CPUs have different 'operating temps'. You mentioned the shutoff temp being exceeded, what is the current setting?

I hope you have no difficulties following this and don't forget to post your CPU model. :P

      Thanks for replies.

      In response to DeltaSlaya ...

      * You suggested cleaning my PC! Well, it's both dust and virus free!  ;)
      * The CPU is an AMD Athlon XP - I looked up the operating temp and it said 85-90 deg C on www.computerhope.com
      * The idle operating temperature is about 60-65 deg C
      * The maximum temperature I can set in the BIOS is 75 deg C (below operating temp!!! ???)

      I hope this helps!

So the maximum cut-off temperature is 75C? Can this be disabled? Try downloading two programs: Speedfan to monitor RPM and temp. SuperPI, for stressing your system, I know its not the best but its simple. Open both of these up and then start SuperPI going for 32M or something - that should go for long enough to get the temperature up. Watch the temperature and if the system cuts out then remember the last temperature you saw and post back with it.

I can't help too much more; hopefully a hardware / BIOS expert will reply and they may be of more assistance.

This makes no sense.  What do you mean?  Why did you simply post the link to www.computerhope.com, the home page?
