    Spontaneous Reboot Problem
    « on: May 11, 2008, 06:55:10 PM »
    Hello all! I'm just stopping in with a computer question I haven't been able to solve myself. If anyone could help, I'd greatly appreciate it!

    My computer seems to have some sort of mysterious brain cancer which causes it to spontaneously restart itself without warning. I've come to realize it does it a LOT (but not always) when i come back from standby - the screen will come back and i'll have about five or six good seconds of functionality, then an audible "click" (like a switch shutting off) screen goes black, system reboots normally, but the active desktop message comes up on the desktop.

    it also does it intermittently while i am using it, whether typing or browsing, doesn't matter. it feels like a physical connection problem, but nothing's touching it... and the problem has been going on for 6 months, despite having taken the computer apart (superficially, cables and stuff) to move it from one room to another & getting a new monitor.

    any ideas on what this is??

        Whoops, sorry  :-[

            * Using Windows 2000 Professional
            * No error messages are coming up
            * Very old no-name computer with various parts all frankenstein-ed together.
            * Have not installed any new drivers within last 12 months
            * Cannot correlate the problem's onset to anything installed or removed...

          Are you by any chance running Norton and/or roxio? Have you tried disabling screen saver?

            1. Disable standby, sleep, etc - possible problems
            2. Get RightMark CPU Clock Utility: http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml. Monitor computer's temps.
