first add ons disabled, then won't reboot
    « on: November 01, 2008, 01:29:19 PM »
I may not have all the info on this system as it was custom built, but here's what I have so far:

    Processor:                AMD
    RAM:                         8 gig
    Total Memory:          1047552K
    Hard Drive:               Maxtor 7H500F0
                                     Bootable Add-In Cards
    CDROM:                    LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S
    Network:                  NVIDIA Boot Agent 242.0535

I recently started getting an "add ons disabled" message.  Then the computer stopped booting.

    Thanks Again!

What is the exact error message?

What did you do before the problem? (downloads/installs/hardware changes/ect....)

What happens now? What EXACTLY happens when you press the power button?

        Thanks for getting back.

I was surfing the net viewing some videos.  No new hardware installs or downloads that I'm aware of.

I have two unfamiliar programs on the Add and Remove Programs list.  One is Check Point SSL Network Extender Components Shell.  The other is Check Point SSL Network Extender Service.

I'm not actually getting an error message when I hit the power button.  I get a black screen with a Windows XP logo and a dotted blue line that scrolls for ten seconds then the screen shuts off.  After one second it comes back on but now the blue dotted line is not moving.  Nothing else happens - just a freeze on the logo screen.

I can also get the screen that allows me to start in safe mode with networking capability.

Got a couple of logs.  For the other programs I got "cannot open in safe mode" or "system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation."

I'm not sure this is a malware problem but we can have a closer look.

Please print these instructions as they will be needed later when Internet access is not available.

Download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.

When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with Administrative rights

            • Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
            • (this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix).
            • DO NOT use it just yet.
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
            • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
            • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
            • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
            • When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
            • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
            • Copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log (from normal boot mode).

              Hello.

Everything ran fine but we're still frozen on the black xp screen.

The log is attached.  I still can't boot up in normal mode to give you another highjackthis log.

Is there a way to remove questionable registry files while in safe mode?  If I did would it make a difference?

I'm not sure that this is malware related.

              What files?

Do you have an XP CD?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below:
              • Click on Start > Run and type sfc /scannow then press Enter (note the space between scf and /scannow)
                • Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue  progress bar goes away
SFC - Which stands for System File Checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.
