where do I get good quality pictures from?
    « on: March 01, 2009, 07:22:03 PM »
I am working with photoshop and would like to know where I can get some good quality pictures from. I am just searching for images using google image search at the moment, as I am not sure where else to get them from. The ones I download from google image are mainly jpegs and appear really blurred when I load them into photoshop.

They might be blurred because the pictures small and its zoomed in too far

I don't know what you're using the pictures for but keep in mind many pictures will have copyrights attached to them. So if you're planning on using these images for anything public or that could be making money make sure you have permission to use them.

I've created a great listing of a number of websites that have royalty free images the majority of which are good quality images at the below link.

Nice! wheres devian art though?  ???

I was a little hesitant about  linking deviantART because of the lack of information on usage rules with most of the artists works. However, it is a great resource so after some consideration I've added it to the listing with a disclaimer about making sure it's ok to use before using it. The majority of the links on my site have clear disclaimers on usage and/or are just completely free to use, which is more of what I was aiming for on this document.

This update will be uploaded when the next update takes place.

First of all guys, let me thank you for all the links. Now I just need to clear one more thing up regarding the usage of these pictures. I don’t wish to use them to make any money, but would like to use them in Photoshop and some videos I edit. The general public will see these, so I guess I need to know a couple of things first. So, does royalty free mean I can use the pictures and edit them to my liking, or, am I restricted altogether when it comes to editing other people pictures.

Generally (but not always) royalty free often refers to a stock image that retains the copyright by the publisher of the image but can be modified and used by other people. However, there are several different variations of royalty free, copyleft, and fair use work so it's always a good idea to check with the publisher before using other peoples work. Most people will allow you to modify the pictures but simply want credit for their own work.

This is why I never suggest using Google images to find pictures because it's often difficult or impossible to find the original author of the picture and properly get the rights to use that image.
