Connecting S-video to A/V
« on: March 08, 2010, 04:21:35 PM »
I bought a cable that has S-Video on one end and A/V on the other. I connected the S-Video to my computer and the A/V to my TV. The screen stays blue though.

I went into my display control panel and I set up a dual display. After that, any time I mess with my computer's resolution, my TV screen flickers and my computer screen actually shows up on the TV but then a couple seconds later, it goes blue again. I have messed with the settings and I can't seem to get the screen to stay visible.

Any idea how to get this to work?

Standard TV resolution is 640x480. You'll need to set the display resolution of the secondary monitor to that.

That is unless it's a newer/larger LCD TV.

Use a S-Video to S-Video Cable, or tighten cables.

What outputs are on your computer and what inputs are on your TV?  Avoid using a converter if you don't have to.

I did the same thing the OP did once.  I have an S-video cable with AV on the other end.  I connected the s-video into my video card and the a/v into my 19" crt tv.  It worked but the resolution was horrible.  Everything was blurry..

If the tv has a higher resolution, then it is not standard, it would be hi-def. Also, the signal that is sent through an RCA A/V connector is on standard resolution (640x480) or less.

It's safe to say, from the amount of info provided by the OP, that we are dealing with an older monitor that doesn't have the capabilities of what we are used to. Maybe without even s-video.....

S-video and composite video (A/V or RCA) handle video in very different ways.  There are probably some converters that can manage the transition electronically, but just using a cable won't do it very good.

Yeah, my computer is very new but my TV is very old. The TV doesn't have an S-video input or I would use that. The only options are Coax and A/V. For some reason, it does not allow me to set the resolution to 640x480. The lowest it will go is 800x600.

The lowest the TV resolution will go is 800x600? That sounds like the lowest resolution of the PC itself. If the TV is old enough, you probably won't even be able to adjust the resolution on it. It stays at the standard 640x480, because it can't display any higher.

You can change the resolution in the registry, if you feel up to it.

What I meant is that when I am setting up dual display on my computer, it allows me to set up both displays separately. Well, my 2nd display is listed as the TV and I was trying to set up the resolution for the 2nd display but in my display control panel, it wouldn't let me set the display as low as 640x480.

Does your video card have a separate display manager that can change the resolution? What kind of video card do you have?

Yeah, I have a Nvidia 9800 GT card and to set up a dual display, I used the Nvidia Control Panel. I couldn't figure out how to do it with just the display properties on my computer since it didn't auto detect my TV when I plugged it in.
