Whew, I need some big help lol
« on: July 26, 2005, 03:35:53 AM »
Okay so heres the problem, My Uncle used to own one of those Lan Lounges, but did it in a very rich neighborhood to which everyone had a computer and such and basically no need for his computers, so he gave my mother one of the computers he had and since then, turned to poopoo, It got so bad we gave it to him to give to his computer person who said it was all fixed...and it came back worse. I can't start up anything and the screen is right next to me and it first prompts up something i've seen before

Start the computer up in
1. Normal
2. Safe mode
3. step by step confirmation
4. command promt only
5. Safe mode command prompt only

Then no matter what i choose i get this rather long message to which I'm retyping all the way out for you guys...

"There is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 1

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\Windows\SETVER.EXE
There is an error in your config.sys file on line 3

Additional low memory (below 640k) will be used instead.

anmd thats it, i don't really know what to do, I mean i'm good with like doing things on the computer like games and online and such, but i really have no idea what I'm doing with this. I normally turn to my brother but he is in England serving his time in the milatary, and i have no idea to what I'm doing. any help would be great.

Back to the drawing board. Forget the boot floppy for the time being. Reboot the computer. When you get to the C:> prompt, do the following:
1. type ren config.sys config.old <enter>
2. type ren autoexec.bat autoexec.old<enter>
3. type scanreg/fix<enter>
Reboot the computer and post back the results.

Type dir/p/w and look through the listing. Directories will be listed in brackets like [WINDOWS]. See if the windows directory is in the list or has possibly been renamed. If nothing seems obvious, type dir/s win.* and see if can find win.com or any other file with win as part of the name.

Nope it said in the beginning that it couldn't find Win.com and i dont see anything in the dir that has win windows windo or anything else that would resemble windows in it.
