Firefox 4 Beta 4
« on: August 25, 2010, 06:52:38 AM »
Firefox 4 beta 4 is out. It is stable and usable. Only problem for me is that it does not support RoboForm, so I can't use it as my primary browser. But it looks good and you might want to try it out:

Been using it on my laptop since beta1 and I really like it.

As for add-ons, there is a workaround to get them to work: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/topic/40828-how-to-bypass-firefox-40-betas-incompatible-add-on-error-and-install-extensions-anyway

Not sure if that will work with RoboForm Broni, since the RoboForm folks themselves say they don't support Firefox 4 yet, but I'll give it a try :)

I have a lot of add-ons and all of them work in FF4 after applying the above fix.
They're still listed in Tools>Add-ons as not compatible, but they work.
Oh, for some reason, "Personas" won't work, but that's the only one and not crucial by any means.

Well, not only did it not work, but when I tried to use the RoboForm toolbar it pretty much renered Firefox Useless. I uninstalled it on this system and will stay with 3.6 until RoboForm puts out a compatible version. Meanwhile, I do have the Firefox beta instlled on a diffrent system so I can play with it from time to time. Thanks anyway - it was certainly worth a shot.

On that other system, make sure, you also install Mr. Tech Toolkit.
Now, when I think about it, it may be a mix of both, which makes my add-ons working.
Normally, Mr. Tech always took care of incompatible add-ons, but with FF4, it didn't work by itself.
Then, I applied listed above edit and all worked.

I'd curious to find out, if it worked for you.

I have Mr. Tech installed on all of my Firefox 3.x versions. I'll install it in the beta next time I'm on that system. I'm assuming you reinstall your add ons after you make the change in about:config, yes? Or does it not matter when you install them?

No, I didn't do anything to them.

But you do actually install them in 4 as opposed to their being "imported" from 3 (like the bookmarks, pw's, cookies, preferences, etc), right? And thanks Broni.

Let me think...it's been a while...
For sure, 3.6 won't upgrade to 4 beta, so I installed it separately.
Now, here is a part I don't recall....
I believe (I'm not 100% sure), that when I installed 4 beta, it used 3.6 data and all add-ons (including Mr. Tech) were there, but they didn't work.
Then, I applied the above edit and all worked :)

Unfortunately, I can't be sure about the above order :(

Oh, BTW, 3.6 still works as it did before.

Yeah, I installed the beta in a directory of my choosing so it wouldn't interfere with version 3. I did see the other add-ons in 4 but of course all said they were incompatible. Okay, I'll check it out next time I'm on that sysatem and let you know what happens.

Well, I'm on the "other" system now and made the change in about:config. Many add-ons still show as not compatible and don't work. Foremost among them are roboform and colorful tabs, two of my favorites. No biggie, I'm fine with 3.6 for now.
