    PC shutdown
    « on: October 10, 2010, 07:20:04 PM »
I am currently using a Windows XP SP3 system, Geforce 220 1g graphics card, 3g memory, AMD Athlon 64X2 3800 processor on a MSI 7250 motherboard. My issue is that my PC repeatedly shuts itself down, some times the blue LED around the power button will flash, other times it will not. Usually this happens when I attempt any video intensive program, such as netflix or online gaming. I have tried the following so far to fix the problem with no results.
    Updated all Drivers
    ran memtest34
    ran chkdsk
    cleaned and greased heat sink
    installed new Power Supply
    swapped out Video card
    Formatted/reinstalled Windows XP
    Flashed / updated BIOS
If I am missing anything I would really appreciate some advice, I am not looking forward to buying a new motherboard and processor.

Have you monitored any temperature for any mobo components or internal devices installed using CPUID HWMonitor aside from replacing some parts? You may know what's going up during playing intensive games or wathcing videos as you mention.

Just downloaded it now, everything is currently between the min/max ranges, however just got a shutdown while trying to download it.

My first thought would be checking your heatsink/CPU fan.

I had a client complaining about random shutdowns in the past. It was a build up of dust causing overheating to your CPU.

Since components today have some kind of failsafe mechanism built into it, it would shutdown if excessive heating occurs to prevent physical damage.

        Hope this helps.

          Why?

Auto shutdowns only relates to the OS. If the overheating occurs to the physical component, such as a CPU, it will shut it off without shutting down the OS.

I had already tried this, the heatsink is clean, with new compound applied, thank you for the suggestion however.

                uhmmm...RAM maybe?

Reading your spec, you have 3GB of RAM? Could it be your mobo requires either 2 or 4 sticks? You cant place 3 sticks if the requirements says its a dual channel. I could be wrong though.

Either before of after Brett21 post, try to reseat your RAM beginning with 1 RAM. See if that changes anything.

I ran memtest with no errors found, however if it was memory wouldn't I receive the blue screen of death?

You said you ran chkdsk - how? The correct way is to boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r - is that what you did? If not, do it now. I'm not suggesting the problem is with the hd, only that you should make sure it's not.

If memtest found no errors, let's move away from ram as a possible problem.

Have you tried a clean boot?
