I ordered a computer last year (a Sony big ticket) but the only option was Vista. Yuck!

Anyway, how hard is it to upgrade to the newer platform without risking big trouble in doing it?

Not hard at all. Just make sure you create an image of your system drive first in case you either run into trouble or decide to go back.
