System says I have the most up to date drivers, so that does not appear to be an issue.

      Should I buy this?  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001MSS6CS/ref=oss_product

For about $6 I can find out if it is the jack port by plugging in to that adapter and then plugging in to a USB port.  Thoughts?

I've spent $6 in a lot worse ways.  Maybe I've missed it but do you have a separate sound card or is it really on the motherboard.  If you have a separate sound card the outputs will be in one of the expansion slots.  All you need to do is look at the back of your computer to see where your sound jacks are.

I just checked and the inputs are not in the expansion slots so they must be part of the motherboard.  I didn't buy a separate sound card.  What I have came with the computer.  I'll hopefully have a verdict by next week when I get the adapter from Amazon.  Best Buy didn't carry them.

If the adapter does what you need, stick with it, but another option would be to buy a separate sound card.  It does sound like a jack problem, and that's not something that's easy or cheap to fix unless your are good with electronics and a soldering iron.

Of course you are free to spend your coin in any manner you so chose. However to cash in a 1.5 year old computer because of a sound card issue sounds excessive in my book. If however you were looking for an "excuse" to buy another computer then by all means go for it. It would seem to me a sound card replacement would be your 1st order of business (as i suggested earlier if you can borrow one temporarily ). I have made many great purchases at garage sales from people selling essentially very good computers with few faults so i have somewhat of a conflict of interests to urge you not to--i may be the beneficiary of your upcoming garage sale  ;) . truenorth

I get great sound if I plug in headset to the box or if I plug in to the speakers directly.

Since plugging the headset/headphones into the speakers no doubt uses the same Phono connector to the sound card, I don't see how that connector could be the problem.

I agree, but I don't see any obvious omissions in the trouble shooting.  Is it possible that it's software?

I don't see how it could be. The sound is fine when he plugs the headphones into the speakers so the software and the card are working. It happens with two different sets of speakers so it cant be the speakers.

This is just a shot in the dark here, but could this be caused by interference from something?

Are you certain that you are inserting the plug fully into the speaker jack, it's not just sitting loose in the jack?
Can you hear any static in the right speaker if you jiggle the jack?

          I'd get a sound card....

I would exert on reinstalling OS, correct drivers as a last resort.

I was going in that query but hesitated previously since both old and new speakers provide same output aside from the headphone inserted to the external speakers produce normal audio outputs.

I have messed with the sound jack all I can.  Still the same issue.  Right speaker only has a fraction of the output of the left speaker and there is static in it as well.

We'll see if my $8 adapter solution works.  If it doesn't, then I'll look at a new sound card, or maybe talk myself in to a new computer altogether.  I'll post the results when I get my adapter, hopefully late next week.

For whatever the reason the O/P is STRONGLY adverse to accepting the advice to PURCHASE a sound card (well even to "borrow" one). I cannot resist the conclusion that they really want to replace the computer or are very lonely. truenorth
