Windows 98
« on: August 19, 2005, 01:03:22 PM »
I have an older backup computer...IBM 450 with Windows 98. Today I cannot get Windows to come up. I keep getting " Error on Disc C prevents scanDisc from fixing it. It says ScanDisc enountered a data error while reading the FAT on Drive C. THis error prevents ScanDisc from fixing this drive.
I can't even get on the desktop icon page now..
i have tried safe mode, to no avail.
Any suggestions or advice...other than to toss it??
Manya thanks, miller

Hard disk drive is shot.  If computer is not too old, install new hard drive and reinstall Windows.

http://www.data-recovery-hub.com/information/Logical-Repair/repair-fat.php

But you can try putting delindex.bat onto your '98 bootdisk and running - A:\>delindex run - from the A: drive.

Then try A:\>scandisk /all /surface

Try also the drive manufacturer's diagnostic diskette available from their site.

It all depends on how valuable the data is on the drive.

You might also try booting form a boot disk and at the A:> prompt type: fdisk/mbr
Fdisk will attempt to repair the master boot record. Scandisk doesn't handle a damaged or corrupted boot record very well.

Windows 98 (SE) OEM.

Without personalized RAM drive if offered the choice.

Hello: I understand one can download a hard drive diagnostic or repair tool onto a floppy disc. Does anyone know where I might find such an animal and how I would know the right one? The computer is an OLD IBM 350.
Thanks

At the drive manufacturer's web-site. Download the file to the HARD-DRIVE and double-click on it, as you would do with any bootdisk, to MAKE the floppy diagnostic diskette.

Do NOT download directly to the floppy.

Which make of drive do you have?

The name and model should be stickered on top of the Hard Disk Drive.

Is it dangerous to remove the cover? I'm really a novice here.

No. Just try not to drool.

You will have to power down the computer if you wish to remove the Hard Disk Drive. Make certain you are grounded and that you have taken Electro-static discharge into account.

You may wish to use the following utility first: Everest Home Edition. This should eliminate the need to physically inspect the HDD as it can tell you nearly everything about your system's hardware.

If I could only get Windows to open, or even start in safe mode...but it won't....goes to a certain point and no further.
So I can't download the Lavalys info...
