When booting up
« on: May 09, 2011, 08:50:08 AM »
First of all before I repaired XP, when booting up, it would list the operating system and immediately continue with the boot. Now when it gets to that point, there is a 25 to 30 second timer that tics down unless you press enter. Anyway to get rid of the timer?

System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery - Time to display list of operating systems (set it to whatever you like).

How did you repair XP? Are you sure you didn't install a second copy?

Thanks and to answer your other question, I used the method that Broni suggested. I'm not sure how to check if I just loaded a fresh copy with the exception that when I rebooted, everything was in order. I have accidentally done a clean install and this wasn't one.

I don't know what Broni told you and I didn't understand the rest of what you said. But if there is only one copy of one OS on your system, you should boot to it immediately.

By booting to it, what exactly do you mean? I checked the properties of My Computer and it only shows one OS, the year etc. BTW, Broni suggested an XP repair which I did. Afterward everything looked normal, which is vastly different than a clean install as I'm sure you know.

Okay. I'm still not sure why you got that countdown though. Open Windows Explorer. How many "Windows' folders do you see (or Windows.old)?

When I go to Windows Explorer and open it, it goes to my documents?

See the Address box at the top? Type in C: and press enter

It seems I'm upsetting you with my ignorance, sorry. When trying to go to Windows Explorer which I accessed through programs...accessories and right click and click open or even if I left click it I go to my documents. When I place C: in the topmost address bar it gets what I said earlier. I don't know what else to do?

I went to C: and opened windows. I have one windows explorer and one windows explorer command. When clicking on windows explorer and clicking open, it goes to my documents as before.

Sorry - I'm trying to do several things at once and am not doing any of them very well. Aside from that, I don't seem to be communicating with you very well. When Windows Explorer is open to C: Drive, how many Windows or Windows.old folders do you see?

We're going to have to get simple here....sorry. How do you open windows explorer to C drive? I can go to my computer and access C drive or I can go to programs and access windows explorer.

It's the same thing - My Computer or Windows Explorer. But you said you did it a few minutes ago when we typed c: in the address bar.

Yes, I even went to the startup menu in documents and settings where it lives...clicked on Windows Explorer and it still went to "my documents" I left clicked and also right clicked and clicked open, It did the same thing. It did the same thing a while ago after entering C: in the address bar and trying to open it.
