High ping fluctuations causing lag spikes. Please Help!

Hi Everyone

A few weeks ago I began to experience lag spikes on my laptop when using the internet. After pinging my default gateway or whatever it's called I discovered that I had matching high pings and timed out requests. I've done a clean install of my OS, upgrading wireless drivers and some other stuff to no avail. I don't get any timed out requests anymore, but I still get high pings every one minute or so causing lags when I'm using the internet or playing. I'm the only one in my house experiencing the problem, and when using a wired connection everything works fine, so it is probably my computer that is something wrong with. As I have searched around quite a bit, I came across a similar forum, and the person was asked to type tracert dslreports.com in cmd, so I've done the same just in case. I have no idea what information i should post so bear with me. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for your reply and what a relief. Should I call my internet provider about my problems then?

What browser are you using?  Have you tried clearing your browser history?

I'd try that and then, if that does not help, call your ISP.

I'm using firefox, and no, cleaning history, cookies and such did not help.
Another thing I noticed is that when i tried out different settings on my router like changing from dynamic IP to PPPoE, my computer would loose the connection, while my brother's still worked fine. Even when changing the settings from his laptop the only computer to loose the connection would be mine. I then had to unplug and replug my router to regain my internet.

Update: Just tried to use a wired connection again, and now I get the same results as when I'm using wireless. Also the timed out request has returned. So basically I get high pings and timed out requests when using wireless as well as wired at home, and only at home.

Cable modem or DSL modem?

It appears to work fine, so it must be my router then. Just weird that it only has a problem with my computer, even though I've reinstalled  both router and computer countless times.

Doing the tracert thing i get pretty much the same results, only a little better overall though, but I guess that doesn't matter.
I'm going to try and install a windows 7 and reinstall my router to see if I get the same problem.
