accessing Outlook Express mail from the Vista environment
    « on: October 19, 2011, 08:27:46 PM »
Hi, all.  My mother's email account on her main computer is accessed through Outlook Express in Windows XP.  Unfortunately, her computer is out of service for a short while, but she does have access to another computer for the time being.  Problem is that the other cojmputer is running Vista, and doesn't have Outlook Express loaded.  She tried to set up access through Windows Live, but doesn't have the password or popmail information handy;  our question is, is there a way to download Outlook Express for Vista, or another way for her to access her account in that environment?

    Thank you for your time.

No, using Outlook Express on Vista is not recommended. I am not sure if it is possible.

Well, there you have it from the mouth of the cow.

Here is a vbery good alternative:

Thunderbird works well on Windows PCs. It is different from Outlook Express, but not too much.  Easy to use, IMHO.

But you may not have to use a pop3 client to get your e-mail in a pinch. Many ISP companies give you web mail also.

As to your settings, you can get help from you service provider. For example, if you provider is AT&T you call the 800 number can ask for e-mail help. If you use the e-mail  they provide. They can provide you a new password and tell you how to get the e-mail using the browser until you get Thunderbird to work.

Same thing for Com cast and the other major providers. Most of them have a web mail site were you can get you mail without the email pop3 client set up.

    BTW:Hindsight.
Good idea to keep all passwords in a safe place other than your computer.
Also, you may wish to set you pop3 settings to NOT remove items from the server. That way you can get your old mail in case you PC does a really bad crash.

Doesn't matter if she used Outlook on the other machine or not...
All she needs is her account name and password to access her mail.

Just to be sure mizhepzibah understands this, it means accessing her mail by web browser.

By the way, mizhepzibah, Windows Vista systems have an email client which is very similar to Outlook Express.  It's Windows Mail.  If you want to set up her email account in it, you'll need some info (incoming and outgoing servers, port #s, and logon settings) from the email account provider for this.  It's the same info that was needed to setup the email account in Outlook Express.

You may be spinning your wheels and getting nowhere.  We don't know that she has any of those email accounts.

The free email client from Microsoft that works with Windows 7 is Windows Live Mail. not Windows Mail.  They are not the same product.
