    Connected but No Internet Access...
    « on: November 07, 2011, 03:36:47 PM »
Acer desktop windows 7. Some time ago my desktop stopped connecting to the internet and I couldn't find a solution to this. I've unplugged the ethernet cable, system restore, reset router, etc. Seems to me there is a problem with the computer itself because I have the ethernet cable wired into my Netgear wireless router and the laptop I'm using now is currently working on it. I tried wiring the ethernet cable directly into the modem my service provider had provided me with and that didn't work as well. My desktop says that I'm connected but have no internet access whatsoever. I just wish for a fix on this.... Help would be much appreciated. :)

What you describe is more often hardware issue. Unless you or someone else has recently change the settings on you desktop.
But a virus* can also corrupt your network. Here is an idea. Make one of the rescue  CD s that boot and scan your computer. These also connect to the Internet for a virus update. So hit two birds with none CD.

Here is an earlier post about rescue CD s.

    Free AV Resue CD downloads.

    * Actually, there are different kins of malicious software . One that attacks your networks settings might be a boot kit.

I know I don't have any kind of viruses or malicious software on my pc because I was running windows security and norton 360 and did a system check numerous times. I actually restored with the windows 7 cd prior to this post and two nights ago...

Pardon me. You did not understand. If you have a root kit present you will not know it. You have to use a scan tool that can not be stopped by the infected OS. The rescue CD is a needed  to find anything that was not found otherwise. The fact that something is wrong with your computer is a clue that you might have a root kit or similar thing. Or it could be something else. The rescue CD is a way to eliminate some possibilities. The rescue CD is an independent OS and is not controlled by the sleeping OS.  A number of 'virus' turn off the AV software using the OS functions.Unless another OS is in charge. The rescue CD is the other independent OS. Try it. Even if it does not work, it is a good tool to have.
Norton 360 is not good enough. There are 365 days.

        Good!
It will try to get into the Internet via the Ethernet cable. If it does not make a connection, that indicates something not right with the hardware,.
Even if is does not, it will try a scan with the small virus database. It just might catch something. Works for me.

So yes, you PC is apparently clean.

(The remarks here are related to direct Ethernet connection, not wireless.)

Now about the Internet issue It would have tried to find a new update over the Ethernet connection, if possible. Did it do that?
Which one did your use and did nit get Internet.?
It does the  scan anyway after failing to find the Internet.  If the hardware is good, it should have got into the Internet.

The rescue CD is a Linux bistro and does not use Windows software components. The Ethernet interface in Linux almost always works and does not depend of special configurations if the connection is via a wired router.

With Windows, a failure to connect is often a wrong setting when using the Internet Connections Wizard. But once it has be set, there is n  good reason for it to change by it self. The most likely cause is hardware failure. But if Linux works and Windows does not, it would not seem to be a hardware issue.

Try running this while hook directly by ethernet.
              1. Go to Start button and hit Run.
              2. Type cmd and Enter.
              3. Type ipconfig /all >Desktop\Ipconfig.txt (or copy paste this on your cmd window) Enter
              4. Open notepad on your desktop and go to Edit -> Select All
              5. Edit Menu again and Copy then Paste it on your next reply.
