Printer causes XP to lock up
« on: September 08, 2005, 11:54:13 AM »
I have tried both an HP deskjet 3320 as well as a Canon Pixma ip1500.  I have updated drivers and nothing works.  Both connect using USB.  I have also uninstalled the drivers and let XP automatically install.  As soon as I hit print, the computer will act like it is sending the info to the printer, and then lock up completely.  Mouse will not move, caps lock light will not change when I hit the button. Holding the power button does not shut down computer.  Have to hit the switch on the power supply.  Tried switching to different usb port on the computer and same problem occurring. Any suggestions?

Keeping the power button pressed for approximately 10 seconds should shut the computer down.

Try uninstalling all printer related drivers.

Scan for viruses and other malware.

Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Trend Micro Housecall
-- Online anti virus scanner.

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner

Firewalls
Use both a hardware and software firewall.
Be advised as dual software firewalls may cause problems

ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

Removal tools
The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either diagnostic tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

HijackThis
-- Manual malware remover. Post the HijackThis log generated only if requested!
McAfee Stinger
-- Virus removal tool. No substitute for a fully functional virus scanner!
CWshredder
-- CoolWebSearch removal tool. Widely known and persistant Hijacker.

Holding the power for 10 sec's or more does not power it off.  Under normal conditions it would, but this time it will not.  I have scanned multiple times with McAfee Anti-virus, Microsoft Beta, Spybot, Ad-Aware...(I work for McAfee as a Virus Removal Tech, and I am sure it is not related).  As I stated, I have removed all printer related drivers and reinstalled using both updates from the Canon and HP websites as well as letting XP install.  Any other suggestions?

I'd still go for AVG Free in case McAfee missed anything.  ;D

What if you use a regular printer cable? Will the problem still occur?

What other devices are connected to the USB port?

Have you connected the USB cable after installing the drivers?

Try disconnecting all other USB devices before installing the drivers and printer.

Does this regard USB 1.0, 1.1 or 2.0?
