Help and advice re: wireless vs dsl
« on: November 30, 2011, 09:04:27 AM »
I am getting as new HP Pavillion shortly.  It comes with a "wireless card".  I'm upgrading from dial-up, and don't know how to choose a provider or how the wireless card will work.  Do I sign up for service with a provider?  OR is it automatic when I hook up the unit?  Is dsl better?  Can someone please educate this dinosaur?

Thanks!

Start with your local phone company and see what they offer. Expect DSL to be about 3 megabits per second for about $20 a month.

Then check with you cable TV company. If they offer 10 megabits per second for $50 per month, go for it.

Otherwise, you need to contact one of the mobile cell phone companies in you area. If you have goo cell phone reception, they can bundle internet into you cell phone plan.

Or, ask you neighbors what they use. If nan vary a lot even in the same city.

First, anything is better than dial up.

Look in your yellow pages for internet services.  There may be several DSL providers, all of which go through the same phone wire to get to your home but some may be either faster or cheaper than others.  Why that's possible is a long boring story.  Most cities have just one cable provider, but a few cities have two.  You just need to check around and see what's available and what you are willing to pay.

Any high speed service will probably cost more than you are paying for dial up, but trust me it's worth it.  Once you have used any high speed service of any kind, using dial up is painful.

You need to be very careful about using mobile phone service for internet access, it all depends on their data plans.  I've heard some real horror stories about outrageous bills when the user didn't check on the fine print.

And your wireless card was probably meant to be used with a local wireless router, not a wireless ISP.
