Can't connect 2 computers through wifi.
    « on: December 08, 2011, 03:51:23 PM »
    Hi everyone,
I want to know whether if it is possible to connect two computers running XP through wifi so that they can share files? If it is possible pls show me how to do it.
    Thanks.

Yes. It is called "Ad hoc" network.
But  If both computers are using a common wireless router, all you need to do is turn on file sharing.
Ad hoc is when there is no router.

Read that over and see if it applies to your setup.

Thanks for the reply but can you pls take me through the process briefly. Both computers are Dell Latitude D410 and running the same OS i.e. XP. I would appreciate it if the elaboration starts from the very first thing i have to do.

Here is a link to the Dell web site.
      http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?DriverId=R151517

According to Dell, the specific instructions mare in the setup for the wireless card for the laptop.

Wireless routers are super cheap used on eBay. So I have not played with the direct PC to PC mode. I currently use two routers. Only one is needed. But you did not say if you have a router.

I have a different Dell laptop with a card from a different source.
But the general idea is that you have to create a profile for the kind of connection your want and you will have to do it for both computers.
The normal is infrastructure. (If you have a router)
But you want a new profile for  Ad hoc. (If you have just two PCs and no router.)

I have never done Ad hoc  myself, so I am not so good about telling you want to do next. Each wireless adapter has its own setup menu. Below is a screen shot I just now took on my wireless setup from the task bar. Yours will be different. One of the options is to make a new profile. For Ad hoc you have to invent a SID to identify new connection and profile. Just pick a simple name. At first ignore the security settings. Change them after you get it to work. That is as much as I can tell you.

OR, you can also use Teamviewer, it is much easier than anything else.

      :)
It happens to have a remote file sharing option. Make sure Teamviewer is installed on  both PC's.
