    Word & Excel Problems
    « on: February 01, 2012, 04:49:35 PM »
The top of the page does not show that line where it tells you were you are.  In Excel I have to delete the line because you can't go up there to change it.  Also in Excel all the lines at the bottom (of Home, Insert, etc) where it says Line , Adjustment...they are all grayed out in Word also.  Using Word & Excel 2010.  I am on Windows 7.

Is there a way to add the line through MS????

    Thanks!

It helps a lot if you provide more details.
    What computer do you have?
Did you change the Video Graphics card?
When did this problem start? Have you tried different screen resolutions?
Does the problem show in other programs.?
Can you use the maximize and restore to change the size of the windows?

The file you attached shows nothing unusual.  Can you post a screen capture of your Word and Excel files which you feel do not appear normal?

It will not load .exl files.  The word file does not show the top where you can make changes and the names under the icons at the top are gray and you cannot click on them.

What is "it"?  What are .exl files?

There are no icons in your Word document.  Again, we need a screen capture image from you to show what you're talking about.

To capture a screen print, you need to press the Print Screen button on your keyboard.  The button name may be abbreviated on the button.  Pressing the button captures the whole display on your monitor.  To capture an application window only where the window may be less than maximized, pressing Alt + PrintScreen will capture only that application window.  This puts the screen capture in the clipboard (the temporary memory area).  Then, you need to paste it into an image editor and save it as a .jpg or some other image format file.  Paint can be used for this.  And, while you have the image displayed in your image editor, you may crop it and save that smaller cutout to further limit the size of the image you'll post in the forum.  You can also use your image editor to draw circles or boxes around certain parts of your image or put arrows on it pointing to specific elements and perhaps add text to further enhance the effectiveness of your image in conveying a point in the forum.

A screen shot is either a BMP or GIF file or some other image file format.
Use paint to make a screen shot. Or your favorite photo/image editor.

Try jpg or png.  And, as I said, you can cut out part of the original image and create a smaller image if necessary.

I suggest using PhotoFiltre to crop and resize the image.  Cropping with it is more intuitive than with Paint.

A screen shot will be under 100k if saved in 256 color  GIF format. A BMP is much larger.

Then, take the other approach.  Create an account on Photobucket or some other image hosting website, upload your image to it, and then link to that image in your forum post.

By the way, why did you create an image with one Word window on top of a larger one?

I don't know whether you really do not have the ability to clearly communicate in writing or you're playing games here but I think we're not going anywhere with this discussion until you say something in a clear, coherent manner, and that hasn't happened yet.

If you look at the WORD doc. At the top where the icons are.  Under each one there is a link.  ie.  In the HOME Tab there is at the bottom of the icons - Clipboard.  to the right, under the icons - Fonts.  Both og these are grayed out and cannot be clicked on.

For Excel - There is a bar above where you are typing, that shows what line you are on and what column you are in.  This bar is missing.

I think the message "compatibility mode" in the title bar may be a clue.

We still aren't getting clear and coherent replies from you.  And, your images are two large to effectively serve as an aid in the communication.

You did not answer my question about why you posted image with two Word windows, one on top of the other.  If an image is going to be helpful, it needs to clearly show the problem.  Your image does not do this.  As I said in previous posts, cutout the specific part of the image that relates to the problem; by doing this, that part of your Word window will appear larger and be easier to decipher in the forum.  For example, see my attached image from Word 2007.  I show only the upper left corner of the window.

That is not confirmed by your image.  Your image seems to show nothing abnormal.  Again, a closeup image could be more helpful.

For the third time, why did you impose one Word window over the other in your image?

Well, create a closeup as, as I suggested, that will show more clearly the buttons you say are grayed out.  I've already told you about cropping an image.  And,  you have a Snipping tool in Windows 7 that works very well for screen captures; it will let you capture only the portion of an app window that you want.

Have you tried to restore your system to factory?
This would not "bring up the virus again."

Keep in mind this would erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS and other software that was on the computer when it was new.  So, any important files not backed up before doing this would be lost.

However, I believe the posts in this discussion up to this point do not clearly indicate taking this action is necessary.  You still have not posted an up-close screen print to clearly show the problem you're having, or thing you have, with Word and Excel.
