hey guys
my brother bought himself a fancy new desktop a while back, decided to put it together himself (and failed miserably) and among other things he never managed to get his internet working. Before researching his internet problems, he assumed our router was crappy and he went out and bought a new router as well as a new card for his desktop (the router is hooked up downstairs, his computer is a floor higher).
His computer never got working, but that is an issue for a separate thread entirely.
The task fell to me to set up the new router/network.
The router itself is a
Asus RT-N53The modem im using is a
Motorola SB5102my desktop is running windows 7 enterprise 32-bit (im no sure what other info i should include?)
I followed the instructions for the setup of the router, and i more or less got it working.
The Problems:However it is obviously not set up optimally.
-My desktop computer is directly hardlined into the router, and about once a week (maybe more, im not using my comp that much atm seeing as its summer) MY internet will completely crap out and i have to restart the modem/router/my computer several times before it all comes back online.
-further, my ps3, which is 7 feet away from the router, receives awful signal strength (1 bar usually). I dont think its our ISP because before all this router switching bs i had a lesser-quality router and i had full signal strength on the ps3. Even if i run a hardline to the router from the ps3, things dont improve a whole bunch and at times i still find myself with one bar of strength
-god forbid my brother try and go online with his ps3 at the same time mine does, he wont get anything in the way of signal strength in that case (yet before we both could rather effortlessly). His ps3 is also a floor above the router, but this never seemed to be a factor with the old router.
-also, the router is "dual band" (whatever that means, i dont know jack about internet stuff haha; could someone explain this?) and i did set up two connections or w.e as per the installation instructions for the router; one is "supposed" to be optimized for gaming and cellphone-internet use, though between the two networks there is no difference in signal strength/quality whatsoever.
-despite my personal opinions of this new "better" router, the salesman assured my brother this one was miles ahead of our old one and would kick the crap out of it performance-wise. i beg to differ atm
My Questions:-could someone point me in the direction of a walkthrough (if it exists) on how to completely reset one's network
-also could someone help me with this "4g -dual band" sutff? what does it mean/do?
-i would also like a walkthrough/tutorial/help on how exactly to set up this stupid router to optimize it for the different uses/applications (the original installer said one network should be set up for general internet use/computers and the other network should be for downloading/online gaming/cell phone use)
if i need to include anything else please let me know!
