Hiding my Identity on the Internet
« on: August 13, 2012, 05:48:43 PM »
I let others use my PC. I use IE while they prefer Foxfire. But many of their activities (downloading, posting, etc) broadcast my identity and others on the internet can trace their activities to me. Example: Any posted photo, by my guests, can be right-clicked to access Properties, which reads "/my name/My Pictures/file name/image title/" How can I change the identity, of all activities on Foxfire, to "Guest"?

How do you know they can trace your activities? I just now downloaded one of my facebook photos, and the right click properties you mentioned only listed the folder i downloaded it to. Pictures don't usually store that kind of metadata, you're probably looking at the current folder on YOUR computer that it's in, which would of course include your name.

Good evening Balatro and welcome to CH

First yes your ISP can and do record all web sites that is visited by your PC. This information is all over here is just one web site http://lifehacker.com/5825746/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-internet-snooping-bill-and-what-you-can-do-about-it

My suggestion for your PC is

#1... Password protect your account on the PC
#2... Create a second account on the PC and set it up as a "limited user" and on that account start the parental control settings in IE also.
#3... Don't let any one use your PC if they make you that nevus or that you may not trust.
#4... You can use a proxy server with SSH etc.

Hope this helps, Mike

Create a new account for guest users with limited permissions. If you look closely within the properties details, Its the Location in which the current user who is logged in and the user(your name), downloads folder is the destination.

One of my guests posted a picture on a forum. A reader right-clicked the photo, clicked Properties, & saw my name attacted to the title. He replied to my guest calling him by my name. The photo is porn, not something I want my name associated with. But my guests promised not to do anything like that again on my PC until we figure this out.

OK, did that. I have 2 guest accounts set up. But now they have no access to some of the files they created while on my account. I went thru the Share procedure, like Share pictures, but My Pictures in their accounts are empty. So I moved these files to Public Pictures. Still they find My Pictures in their accounts empty. So this is getting more and more complicated.

Also I find that I'm broadcasting my name with file I post. "user/my name/HP/....." is in Properties for everyone to access. I went to User but there is no option to Rename.
