    What does "zilla" mean?
    « on: June 17, 2015, 09:51:22 AM »
I was reading the chat forum topics today for a good laugh, and I saw the name ChatZilla referring to an IRC application.  I use FileZilla every day on my job.  And there's Mozilla.  What does Zilla mean?  I looked up wikipedia's definition for it and another free online dictionary's definition, and I still don't get it.

Oh wow. Learn something new every day.  I decided to look up Mozilla while composing this topic, and I saw it was founded by Netscape.

I've been waiting for an end user of the system to ask me what is FileZilla, and I would respond "that is software which was developed by the son of Godzilla".

I don't think you'll find an actual definition of "Zilla" but it's basically a reference to the movie monster Godzilla and in common use means "monstrous" or something to that effect.  FileZilla would basically mean a monstrous FTP server while ChatZilla would be a monstrous IRC client.

Back in the 70's there was an audio manufacturer named GAS (Great American Sound).  They produced 3 amplifiers "Ampzilla", "Son of Ampzilla" and "Grandson of Ampzilla".  I personally owned the "Son of Ampzilla" and can vouch for the fact that it was a monstrous amp.

Well, if you really need to know, it goes from Japanese.

Did you know how Gojira (Godzilla in Japanese) was named? According to Eiji Tsuburaya, the creator of Godzilla: "At the time, there was a tough- looking guy working on the Toho lot. His nickname was `Gojira'. We just adopted it for our monster. It caught on and certainly has immortalized him!"
The form 'zilla' is a  womanizing Japanese words that end in 'jira'

Son of Ampzilla?!  I can hear Ampzilla asking his son, "What you up to, son?"  And he says, "15 amps."
