what is bid?

Hi  -
I never paid any attention before today to the addresses of the e-mail from commercial firms.  This is an example of the addresses I am referring to:   [email protected]     .   What is "bid"?  I understand that at one time there was talk of having a number of classes after the dot but I never heard that any were ever used.  I presume "bid" is like "com" but has some special meaning.     Bob
