SP2 Firewall Issue
« on: February 11, 2006, 09:07:50 AM »
For some reason, even though I have selected the option to turn the SP2 firewall OFF, it stays on... The green light under status does not go away. This is being blamed for me not being able to download a file from verizon that should have no issue coming though... Dell is no help of course. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Followed all those instructions. After Turning it on, and then turning it off, I do not see a status change. Does anyone else have a suggestion?

First lets back up your registry

And try this:

1 Click Start
2 Click Run
3 Type "cmd" in the box and click Ok.
4 At the prompt, type (pressing Enter after each line):

REG DELETE HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess /v DependOnService

REG ADD HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess /v DependOnService /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "Netman"

5 Reboot. Now, attempt to turn off your firewall

This is all safe to do? What source did you get this from?

I still maintain that you can turn it off without editing your registry.

Note A firewall is designed to help protect your computer from attack by malicious users or by malicious software. Malicious software includes viruses that use unsolicited incoming network traffic to attack your computer. Before you disable your firewall, you must disconnect your computer from all networks, including the Internet.

Flame.......  You certainly seem to have odd issues ........ I just checked 4 machines here that have XP with SP2 ...... and I have no problem turning the firewall on or off on any of them ...... and it matters not whether they are on line or not . when I turn the firewall off , it remains off until I turn it back on ...... Perhaps you have some other issue as well .

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

Yes, but there is a school of thought that says a software firewall is barely better than no firewall at all.  Because if anyone can infect your PC with a trojan then surely that trojan can be programmed to silently circumnavigate any software firewall.  A hardware firewall is much better.  And a software firewall without a fully up to date reliable virus checker is utterly pointless.
Only able to visit the forums sporadically, sorry.

        Fed:

Doesn't look like that's working  :-/  I use Zone Alarm for my firewall by the way.

dl65: Yes, a strange issue indeed. The guy from Verizon thought that it was a corrupted firewall.  :o

Fed: Are you saying that I MUST unplug my computer from the modem in order for it to turn off? It should do it reguardless?

          Is that you Flame? :D

Just saying it's wise to disconnect before you turn off your firewall.

Uninstall it & put the Sygate Firewall on.
          http://207.33.111.31/spf/
          Get Version 5.5 Build 2710

I still don't believe it's the firewall that is stopping you from downloading the file.

Verizon said that with the Windows firewall on, it's blocking the portal or the files needed to run this portal. You notice it probably won't do this to my old computer which runs the firewall without problem... I'll have to try it on that old computer and see what's going on... I'd prefer to have it on this computer though... I don't see how switching from ZoneAlarm to Sygate wouold fix anything... It'll create more problems if anything. The firewall works fine. The WINDOWS firewall is the one with the problem.
