Missing Operating System.........eh??????

this is what appears on my screen when i switch on my laptop...... "missing operating system" can anyone tell me what is going on? also, how do i sort this, regards ryan

    Bad hard drive or controller most likely. WHat make/model, and what happened prior to this?
