start/run/sfc and click OK. Select extract one file from disk. Insert windows CD. Click start. Do for each file.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

It's only one problem more I forgot to mention, in my Gateway 2000, my CD-ROM for the win98 files is not being recognized, I would appreciate help to solve that problem. How can I get Windows 98 to recognize my D: drive?
I already checked the BIOS and it does not have a D: drive is there a way to upgrade the BIOS? when I insert the Win98 Startup disk the drive is recognized and I have run setup from it. After running setup I cannot reach anymore. help

If it is not recognized in the BIOS and you have not been monkeying around inside the case I would say it is most likely deceased. You could try reattaching the cable and power plug, but if that doesn't get it, I would buy another. They are really cheap. I suspect that is the originalone with that machine, so that makes it 5+ yhears old? You can try another drive in there just to confirm where the problem is.

If it were me, I would remedy the CDROM and then reinstall Windows, but the other way may work for you. Let us know.  ;)

Bless your heart, such a bearer of good news you are! I was hoping for some kind of solution for my poor old drive, I know it still lives, otherwise it wouldn't run my Wind98 setup cd. BTW does it need a card? I think something is not connected right, I'll try momking around it for sure and see what happens ( it is my learning PC). Seriously, thanks for your suggestion.

I think it bears to mention that my troubles with the cdrom drive started when I formated the c: drive and got rid of windows 3.11 to install wind98 instead. I have nothing but troubles since. I've been doing all of this because I want to plug in my dsl to this gateway 2000 with the maximum memory i could install 4x72 simms sticks and 405mg hd. windows is taking half of the drive, but now it wont let me install any of the drivers i need for my isa card and my cdrom and a couple other pnp that i don't need but they cause me problems. Every time I try to install the right drivers i get the blue screen of death. All i want is to get to the internet from the gateway computer while my main computer is in the shop.any help for me? i'm broke and i'cant buy a stick of gum! :)

It depends largely on how the CD is connected. Is it connected to an onboard IDE port or is it connected via an IDE addon card?
If it's the former, then you need to set the BIOS to recognise that there's a CD unit on (Hopefully!) IDE 2.
If it's the latter, you'll need a driver for the add on card.

You'll find a self extracting bootdisk here that will load real mode CD and mouse drivers among other things. Download it, extract it and run the executale with a diskette in the drive.
Once the diskette has been created, boot from it. Read the screen output and tell us if your CD appears at drive letter V.
