Help! Please.. mouse pointer stays as hour glass..

I need help fast.  I  got a new PC,  I am  giving  the old one
to a friend at work, but I want to delete my saved files from it.
The problem is that when I right click to highlight the file and delete
it.. the mouse pointer stays as an hour glass for like 90 seconds!!
How do I stop it from doing this?  I wanted to get it all cleaned up
tonight so we can deliever it to her tommorow.. can somone PLEASE

Turning off AV etc may help.

Anti Virus.

OK, the AV was uninstalled.. she has her own to install.  It
is WIN 98.

There's the problem; it's Windows 98! (Just kidding)

Did removing AV solve the problem, or is it still too slow?

And you're gonna hate me for this, but I must ask: Did the computer get scanned for viruses? Backdated has an excellent post here about making sure the computer doesn't have a virus.
