Have a good read here:

http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1149948530

Is this a dialup or broadband connection? If the latter do you have a router? A firewall is a good idea and a router does this very well.

Did you format the drive and instal Win2000 or just a dirty, "over the top" install?

i have a clean install of win98se.. with IE5 upgraded to IEsp1 then
upgraded to to win2000p then add sp3... i think this not a clean
install to win2000p...do i have to reformat it again and have a
clean install of win2000p? i have reformatted it this is the
second install...reinstall is my last option...thanks

If you install Win2000 you do not have to have 98 on there first. If it is an upgrade, you just insert the Win98 CD when it asks for it for a few minutes.

The latest update is SP4. You can download this, burn to a CDand install before even connecting to the net and install your antivirus of choice and a good spyware tool like Spybot at the same time. Then set up your Internet and get the remaining updates online.

It is strange that Win98 would urge you to upgrade to Win2000 (which was not even released when Win98 was out!)

Do a correct reinstall and let us know.  ;)

That sounds like pirated software there, my friend!   :o

Microsoft doesn't sell it like that.

Microsoft does not have validation, activation, etc. on 2000 as it does on XP. I know the screen you're talking about with 2000, but it really doesn't validate anything.
