Com port problems

 :-? Earlier this evening, there was a storm in my area.   Nothing bad, but it did thunder and lightning some.  While it was storming, I was on the internet using a dial-up modem.  My computer disconnected from the internet for some reason and now will not reconnect.  In fact, if my computer is plugged into the phone line, you hear the "if you'd like to make a phone call" message, like the phone is off the hook even when you're not trying to connect.  As soon as you disconnect the phone line, you get the dial tone back.  (I checked and the jack works ok, my phones work ok, and the phone cord works okay).  So, I went into the modem and clicked on troubleshoot.  The first thing it said was that the com port needed to be enabled.  It told me to go into the device manager and click on "port".  Well, when I go into the device manager, there is no port listed.  Help??  :-?

Turn the computer off for 10 minutes AND disconnect the phone line from the modem port. This will give you a hard reset and all will probably be fine. If it does not, you may have a fried modem, but I think you will be fine.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried it and it didn't fix it.  Every time I plug the phone cord into the computer, the dialtone goes away after about 30 seconds and it acts like a phone off the hook.  Thanks though.  Any other ideas?

Remove the modem from the machine and then restart after deleting your modem drivers. Replace the modem and restart the machine.

Think about getting a new modem. What model was it? They are reasonably cheap.

    Guessing here again, it happend to me years ago. Lightning struck in my area no where near my house. I received a surge spike.  FRIED everything electronic in my house. Mobo / modem and HDD  were all effected.  I am guessing your modem was "hit". Double check with  GX1_Man  for some checks on your other components.  Lightning is real bad,  I unplug everything now when it gets close*.

    Nothing else in my house has been affected, even my other phones and desktop computer work fine.  Could you give me more complete instructions on how to delete/install my modem?  Thanks.

    Go to Control Panel/System and right click and delete anything in the modem area.

    Turn off the computer. Physically remove the modem and start up for a bit and then shut down. Plug the modem in and then reinstall the drivers if Windows does not automatically do so.

    That's a step by step.

    Here's something to consider. Not the best, but it works and is cheap.

    If your original modem was damaged by the storm, and many have been, then a replacement is the ONLY solution. Be glad there was no other damage to your machine.  :o :o :o :o

    This could be a case of where a $15.00 modem saved an $800.00 machine...count your blessings and replace the modem.
