January poll
« on: January 02, 2007, 05:17:31 PM »
For the month of January and the New Year we thought it would be interesting to see how many users are planning on upgrading to the next Windows operating system, Microsoft Windows Vista.

Feel free to post any comments of why you’re upgrading and/or why you don’t plan to upgrade.

All past monthly polls and results can be found on the Computer Hope poll page.

I have 98, 98se, w2k, xp, and *nix. But I'll look out the window and check. Nope, the horizon is dark. No vista, and no VISTA. ;D

I voted ...yes ..... but to qualify that , I am planning on purchasing a new pc sometime in the comming year , to take advantage of the newest technology .
I would have Vista on that machine ...given its reasonably bug free by then .
I will continue to use XP on my other machines.

I have the express upgrade, all I have to pay is for shipping, so I'll pay for that, and just keep the CD for if I ever need to upgrade, but I'd prefer not to.

I think I will, for several reasons.

The first reason is that it's always good to have a full OS disc for when Windows fails. I have one, but having more to fall back on never hurt anyone.

The big one, though, is that I want to assemble a cheap machine, and use it as a first line of defense: When I want to download something I'm not sure about, I'll put it on the cheap box If it doesn't crash it, I put it on my computer. To do that, though, I'd need another OS Disc. I'm not sure, but I think we've been upgrading since Windows 3.1. At least, our only Win95 disc is an Upgrade. :-/

I voted No, staying with XP, but I would like to have seen some time period stated in the question.  I'm sure I'll eventually upgrade, but I have no plans to do it in the near term, probably not during 2007.

It costs money to upgrade, right?  Slap-dab out of that stuff.  Besides, I don't trust Mikey to sell me something stable.  I'm not yet brave enough to go *nix, so I'm stuck in the middle again.

I meet the system requirements but I'd feel more comfortable with 2Gb of RAM.
I'll stick with XP in classic mode thanks, Vista is not on the horizon for me any time soon, if at all.

Probably no upgrade until I get another machine (the current ones don't meet specs). Besides, I've reached my level of incompetence with XP. (see The Peter Principal)  ;D

Well, my computer is only 500MHz so I don't meet the requirements. But even if I did, I wouldn't upgrade because:

A. I'm perfectly happy with Windows XP
B. Vista is too *#$&*&@# expensive!!!

Too expensive, I'm staying with XP.
And why are we replacing the U in Unix with an asterisk * ?

Vista looks cool, but I must admit, I am disappointed with how there are like, 5 different versions of one operating system. Why cant it all be included in one OS on one disk?

I've also heard that all 8 versions, or maybe only 7 (?) (excluding Vista Basic?) will be included on one disk.
The thing you will pay for will be the key to unlock the versions.
However, the problem is then that if the key is cracked, all of the flavours are available.
Maybe just a rumour?

Right?
Or wrong?

You have to unlock Vista versions? I smell a warez video game.

Shorthand for all the Unix variants; e.g. Linux, Minix, Dynix, Ultrix, Sinix, and all the other bits and bobs that don't contain the letters i, n and x.  (E.g. BSD, HP-UX, AIX, Solaris.)

Be wary of Vista. It has been designed with HUGE DRM security and performance issues that should be of concern to any but the most casual users. These are showstopper problems that are just now coming to light.

Read the forums at www.grc.com and badvista.fsf.org for more info.

No, you won't need to buy different versions.  But, you should carefully consider the differences among the various versions before deciding which to get.  Here's some info from the mothership: The Editions

Do not like at all what I am hearing about Vista, and how MS is using it as a policeman on my PC. My next upgrade will be to Apple.

Hello, gmanto,

Windows Vista will only cause problems, ideally, if you're into illegal software. Of course, there are bugs, but I haven't run into any, i.e. MS hasn't accused me of theft. :)
