W-98, Notebook Troubles...
« on: January 26, 2007, 06:18:02 PM »
Hello,

I have a major problem with my notebook, . .

At first when I turned on my notebook, (presently not online), I had an

unclear icon screen view, (fuzzy) with no little arrow to point at things,

therefore no access,

Prior to this, I first noticed that something was wrong when it was reading an old disc, when I had a completely different one in, (CD), . .
then later, when I started up, I had the no-curser and fuzzy screen.

I purchased it off the shelf at RS over the phone at X-mas I was desperate to have it, . . they said it was the only one they had. I purchased it 97 months ago.

The battery never worked very well, only for a few minutes at a time, I always thought this would be corrected with a new battery, it wasn't,
now it has been sitting for about a year since I tried to get it to move a little faster and did a full restore, wasn't real sure if it would take 2 CD's that Compaq sent to me, not much happened on the screen when I did run them.

I fooled around with it and started it up a couple of times in the safe mode and I have the curser back but with a fuzzy screen and any program I open is the same way, My Documents, word processor, unclear and can not read very well.

I opened an e-mail from the document folder and an Outlook Express file opened and treated me like a new user, I think it was a connection wizard.
I filled out and finished, then it opened the e-mail I clicked.

Does anyone have a clue ?

Hello, excuse me if I sound rather rude. You should have taken it back to RS right at the start of any trouble. They are very good about warrant service, but 97 months is a very long. time. What is the model number? Do you really want to fix it?    :-?

Plug it into the wall, and use the restore disks again and lets start over.

There may be significant hardware problems but let's remove all the possible software issues and start with a clean slate.

What are the specifics of the machine? A model number?

I have gone to boot disk in my computer C:\BootDisk

and clicked it, . .
then the computer chatters while it Compaq Quick Restore Flashes;

Creating Boot Diskette - Please Wait

Then it stops chattering while still flashing,

and reads below, . . Not ready
DNH:  100.B4 4/30/99 C:\CPQS\Message\FDFAILED.All EN  EN
Sharing Violation reading drive C

Abort, Retry, Fail?_   (blinkin _ )

You may or may not be familiar with the Compaq Notebook, but, . . .

I have also located in C:\ a file boot disc refered to in last post,

a file (blue and white icon with box; and it appears to be Qrst5

opened it, . .  It reads;

At Top.....Quick Restore Sector Transfer,   v5.01  (C) 1989, 1999    Compaq Computer Corp.

Inside this Big blue page a large grey box, Marked Label 1 and reading;

QuickRestore  '99 Boot Diskette for Windows 98 Sngl

Disk 1of 1

If booting from a CD, make the destination drive B

Under this box

Enter Destination:

Then a small box labeled;
Enter Destination Drive

This has contains A with a curser blinking under it.

I do not have the little arrow or curser to change this so it remains A

Under this ther is a green box and in it reads ;

Diskette 1 0f 1 is a 3.5 in. 1.44MB disk

( I believe that is A drive for floppy disk, I don't have one )

At the bottom of the page reads

Check Drive & press ENTER to Continue,

What version of Windows are you loading? What if you just reboot the machine with CD #1 in the drive?

It is a Windows 98,
I was under the impression that a restore floppy was needed.

I placed a floppy disk in and ran enter;

It loaded but made an error while loading 60 or so entrries and stopped at 30 something.

I went to D\: Boot Disk

The D:\BootDisk\ ENBR.HLPdisk file is not a Windows Help file. or is corrupted.

Is the machine set to boot from CD first (at least before the hard drive) in the BIOS?
