Can't record a download

Hope I'm in the correct forum. I can't record to my system anything I want to download. I can view a download mpeg (streaming video) for example but I can't save it to a file. That is unless it's being hidden but I've done searches after I try to save and can't find a thing. Help me please. Something I just discovered-I installed an external harddrive and noticed that even though I formatted it NTFS it states in the computer management screen that it is FAT32. This download problem began at the same time. Could that cause this?
