i have recntly loaded aix on a server, i have added the ip address and everything, but when i logged out and tried to log back in, i get this message: dt messaging system cannot be started. the ip address in /etc/hosts is correct, other than that i cannot think of anything that is wrong.

As far as I know, experience of AIX is fairly limited round here.  I'm one of the Unix/Linux regulars, but have never had a play with AIX, sorry.
Only able to visit the forums sporadically, sorry.

There should be an option to do a command line login. Once you've logged in that way, you should be able to find the error log for your last GUI login. That should give you the detail you need.
