Jp:
When you reformat your computer, all data is lost and removed completely.

You will have no operating system.

There will be no software installed.

This is why you need your Microsoft Windows Instalation CD or restore disk. Without it, there will be no where to go.

(Your computer would sit with "No operating system found" and maybe a blinking text cursor, that does nothing, if you have no instalation CD)

I was given three of the four disc that compaq packed with my computer, I have requested numerous times to compaq and MS with no satisfactory answer, Can I get through this with the three I have;

1. Compaq Restore Plus
2. Compaq operating system
3. Compaq Restore Supplemenmtal software CD

4. I don't have,
Compaq Special Content CD

I do have a users guide and am reviewing it, any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated,

I do have a fax software that I believe was downloaded over the internet, I need to find a way to save it during thisd process, it is about the only thing I really care about, etc. all other things I believe I can easily replace.

Is it possible

When I first started AVG, I did get a warning that I had a ROXY CD & DVD creator that should be updated, so not to interfere, but I went to there site and was not able to update it, I didn't know I had one.

Would this have anything to do with re-infection after healing etc. ??

Jp

Was it ? Itwas !
Tragic Kingdom in this post Java update was related to focal point of infection ?

and I am not tavoiding Dl65, I am studying his plan it looks good I just, for the time being trying to understand and relate, but did anyone answer my question concerning this Roxzy update ?

N-------------OHHHHHHHH !

most are
A0011064.exe   Trojan horse Generic. DLY   C:\systemvolume information\_restore

Infections like this are in your System Restore folder.  You can get rid of them by turning System Restore off, restarting your computer, and turning it back on again.  I know we're talking about going through with a reformat now, but I'm wondering what affect (if any) doing this would have.

CMatt,

Is this going to put me in a zero BIOS< if something goes wrong ?

I don't think this can be undone once I do it.

I'm really not sure what you mean by this.  Turning off System Restore deletes old restore points and settings, which means you won't be able to restore your computer to an older point.

If you'd like to learn more about System Restore, see the following...

I have just formated SP1, and am ready to install SP2, the CD I have am sure is authentic, it has the genuine halogen on it and is labeled with Microsoft Windows Security Update CD.

Will this be correct ?

Jp

Reason I am asking;
When running the CD I get this;

Welcome to the Windows Security Update CD

This disk will help you improve your computer’s security settings
and ensure your computer has the latest security updates installed.
We recommend that you start by running the Windows Security Advisor
tool, and then install the updates included on this CD. We highly
recommend that you print these installation steps for your reference.

Step 1: Use the Windows Security Advisor (WSA) to improve your
computer’s firewall settings and also to turn on Automatic Updates.
(This feature automatically downloads Microsoft security updates
through the Web. All you have to do is install them.)

Step 2: The Install Updates section of the disk includes critical
updates for your computer. Go here to download Windows
XP Service Pack 1, Update Rollup for Microsoft Windows XP,
DirectX 9, and Windows Media Player 9.

    Jp...... This cd you have ..... Microsoft Windows Security Update CD
    does it contain SP2 or is it the free update cd ( that MS offered back in 2004) ?
    Check the contents and be sure it contains SP2 as well as other critical updates.
    If it doesnt contain SP2, install your anti-virus program and then go to the MS update site and d/l SP2

    If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

    dl65,
    Yes I am pretty sure it is the 2004 issue, the packet with 2 disc is entitled Security Update CD February 2004.
    I don't know how to check the content without going past the first page, which I will attempt to do.
    I am taking it you mean use the other disc to install Free Anti Virus and Firewall Software Trial CD

    This CD came with the pack and is titled EZ ARMOR LE

    Jp

    I checked;

    The content on this page has expired
    Please visit microsoft.com/protect to get the latest updates for your operating system.

      Jp ......  Ok ...... that confirms my thought .  The anti-virus and firewall that is included on that disk is a trial version, so there is no point installing it.
      You must have AVG free antivirus ....... install that . Then go to MS update site and d/l service pack 2 (SP2). Don't bother with the firewall now ..... get SP2 installed first.
      There is a firewall included in SP2 , it's not the greatest, but for now it will suffice.
      Don't install any other software except the anti-virus untill you get SP2 and any recent critical updates installed.
