June poll
« on: June 03, 2007, 05:19:10 PM »
For the month of June we thought it would be interesting to see what you're using to store your backup data if you're backing up your data. In the past most users would have only been using floppy diskettes to store their important files. However, today there are several different methods a user could backup their files.

If you chose other for this months poll make sure to also mention what device you're using to store your backups.

All past monthly polls and results can be found on the Computer Hope poll page.

Everybody is a genius. But, if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing that it is stupid.

I am using Windows Vista, so I have a scheduled backup to occur on a separate partition. That wont protect against hard drive failure, but it will (to a certain point) protect against some viruses, and still archive some of my files.
I also backup to another computer over the network
I also use DVD's and CD's, depending on the media I am backing up
I also use a flash drive

But its different for all different types of media

I back up everything every month on a portable hard drive I have especially for backing up. Right now it's in my cabinet, just backed up like 3 days ago.
I also ocasionally backup my Flash Drive on anothe rpartition on my Drive.
Who backs up on a floppy anymore? ZIP disk is understandable but floppies suck.
You put it in a warm place and the data gets corrupted and it holds so little....
I used to back up on DVD's but now I burn a lot of movies so I needed the CD's

Well, I don't back-up.... But I will one day! (maybe next Monday...)

The CDs I have never work, so I can't really back up my files.

I have a 40GB hard drive that I use for files that I access regularly. I use DVD's for files I don't use often. I also have a 1GB flash drive for transfering important school files to and from school.

Who backs up on a floppy anymore? ZIP disk is understandable but floppies suck.
You put it in a warm place and the data gets corrupted and it holds so little....

Considering I only have 1 floppy drive among 4 computers, I don't using floppy disks at all anymore.

    I use a 500GB external HDD.
All my important data goes on this, very handy :)

When I was a naive nooblet and didn't think I would get a virus because "my system is safe," I managed to go through 4 complete reformat/install Windows in the space of a month before I finally decided to start backing up my data. :-\

Poor me, I'm still stuck with CD-R's.  CD-R's that only work 50% of the time, it seems.  Thankfully, I now know a lot more about computers, so I can fix most of the problems that normally forced me to reformat in the past.  Learning how to slave a harddrive also comes in handy.

Don't back up. Used to on network drive, but then stopped. Good idea to start again I think. Thanks for reminding. :)

Before I actually knew what I was doing, reformatting was my solution to everything ha. Suppose the best way to learn is to make mistakes though.

It really depends on the media I want to backup, but for backing up the contents of my local drive, I use an external USB hard drive.

For my old 1996 laptop, I might occasionally use a floppy... for backing up the occasional Word for DOS document...

Very true... This topic got me thinking about backing up more often/more ways and last night I backed up using DVD's.

I just prefer dragging whatever I need to my external HD... I'm lazy that way. Guess I'll pay for it one of these days ::)

There are free automatic backup software programs.

Maybe, if people know of any good ones, they should post it

(I use the one that comes with Vista now, but I used to use this great free one that I got from www.download.com but I forgot the name)

I backup data to another partition, disk, cd, dvd, or another computer/server. All depends on what I'm backing up.

I just recently began backing up my data, and I have over 4GB of data to backup, and that would take 6 CD-Rs so I just use DVD+Rs. I used to do it on a 128MB flash disk that failed recently.
                System Specs:
                AMD Athlon 64 3200+
                1024MB DDR400
                GeForce 7600GS

                My strategy is as follows;

Acronis is scheduled to run every Sunday night at 3 AM.

The .tib files are saved to partition #4 on HDD #2. This partition is excluded from defrag, diskcheck and any other scans which i found out the hard way is a good idea.

On the first Monday of each month i burn 2 copies of the latest backups to DVD's...one to store here and one off site.

Worst case scenario if i lose both SATA HDD's at once (unlikely but not impossible) i am at worst 3 weeks away from back to normal for my whole system. This is on my workbench machine which sees the most action...program testing etc.

My other machines have similar but not as aggresive strategies but are done regularly.

Another good tip i saw on another Forum i frequent is the user backs up his My Documents folder to CDRW's once a week. But i have no need for that.

another good idea, is to move the My Documents folder to a different partition or hard drive. (Since that is the default store for everything.) That way if something screws up the OS and you need to format, you don't lose everything. Just the stuff on the OS partition.
That's something I learned the hard way, too.

Agree.  I moved My Documents to a non-OS partition.  I think another benefit of doing this is less fragmentation of the OS partition and speedier defragmentation of that partition.

My main backup media is an external HDD.  CD and flash drive also occasionally get thrown into the mix.

Which reminds me to run Auslogics... thanks

Reasons I use a separate partition for just backup:
It works great for making an archive of your files
Its faster than making archives on a CD
Its closer to you (in a sense) that you dont have to go get the CD
I can schedule regular backups easily, without having to insert a disk
                Some protection against viruses

But NO protection against disk failure... (unless the data on drive C went corrupt and the extended partition stayed intact)

Yeah, I back up all my flash drives and mp3 players on another partition. I just back everything up on my external hard drive like very month so it's more or less out of date.

My flash drive holds 2GB, it has its uses.
My brother got it for me as a Christmas present, it was a really well priced one.

Hmm should not be an issue you should only be able to vote once. See if you can duplicate the issue, could have just been a fluke.

... my computer just turned off and ceased to function yesterday! I don't know what was the problem (probably over-use), but after an hour it tuned back on.

After that scare, I backed up all my important stuff and music onto CDs.

I use my external 250GB HDD(mainly), a 1GB Flash Drive, and occasionally a DVD-RW or CD-RW. Just about everything on all of my computers is stored on my external HDD because it is so convenient. I am going to start up a network so moving data will be even more convenient.

Well,in the poll I voted CD-R (Burnable CD).

I also use my slave hard drive. So,I couldn't
choose both now could I ?

The June poll is getting near the end......

Dunno how billards can fuel a hate towards polls, but if that's how the mind works...

I use my external hard drive. I got in a few years ago, its an 80GB, but it's annoying since it's a classic that requires 2 seperate cables, one for the mains and the other for USB.

I'm just bought my Maxtor Portable HDD a couple of months ago.
W/ this portable I'm feel so comfortable to keep all my personal data here & there. But suddenly today when i try to open it while its already connected to my PC the sign 'Access is Denied' pop up. Usually it will become autorun as well.I've tried uninstall USB Controllers through System Properties > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers but it still happen. While I'm try to check it by OS Vista, the system asked me to format it.

The problem is all my important data was inside that drive....  :'(

I think Carbon was referring to why you decided to place this within the June Monthly Poll. That was over 6 months ago; thus the confusion.

I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
