Breakthrough brings 'Star Trek' teleport a step closer
« on: June 10, 2007, 08:04:22 PM »
Scientists have set a new record in sending information through thin air using the revolutionary technology of quantum teleportation - although Mr Spock may have to wait a little longer for a Scotty to beam him up with it.

As small as this all seems, it's a pretty big step.  I don't know how likely it is that we'll ever be able to transport actual matter, but this is still really nifty.

I don't think that people 50 years ago ever thought that we'd have what we have now (tiny phones/computers - everything it getting so small), so who knows. In 200 years, teleporting could be something of an everyday routine!

You have a point, but keep in mind that 50 years ago, people thought we'd all have flying cars by now.

I dont like the idea of flying cars. Teleporters are good though, but they can be a bit unsafe...

Dilbert? Why?

But I think that if we're gonna have teleporters, they can't be commerically used, because people could teleport on top of each other (unless there's some program which checks if that area of space is free). Also, people could just teleport a teleporter into a bank, grab the money, and teleport out.

Or have (like in halo) a teleporter and a reciever so you can only go from one place to another.

Or like in Tribes 2, where you can set multiple teleporters/recievers and you can only teleport to them if they're completely empty.

These very things were covered in The Dilbert Future.

For some drivers, no that would be a good thing...
