Apple takes Safari to Windows and iPhone
« on: June 11, 2007, 03:19:40 PM »
Apple plans to ship a version of its Safari Web browser for Windows, and third-party developers will be able to get a piece of the iPhone, the company announced Monday.

That would be interesting (Safari, not the iPhone).
I may even give it a try.

the beta version is available at apple.com too...

I downloaded it and the first thing I noticed that I really liked was the page search function. It looks really cool! You hit Ctrl-F and type in your search, hit enter and it dims the page and highlights every occurrence of the string. You'd have to see it to be impressed.
I saw this on slashdot and the reviewer said that he found 5 bugs in the first hour or two of using the program, so apple obviously has some things to work on still. After all it is a beta.
Safari boasts that has the faster loading time, html parsing, and javascript interpreting. I don't know if I believe it. Especially since it said opera had the slowest html parsing... I thought opera was the fastest! Of course I haven't looked at opera in a while, the may not be so great anymore.
Safari uses its own look that completely disagrees with windows xp. But I guess that is what apple is the best at: making their own stuff. I think I would like it better if it were made to match the OS.
Everything else in the browser seems to be close to the same as firefox and ie. You have options to enable and disable features like css and javascript, block pop-ups, change appearance of web pages. You have tabs, bookmarks, rss, and auto complete.
The download window is similar to the firefox download window. It lets you stop downloads and restart them later at your convenience.
Maybe with more security benefits and customization, this would be a viable alternative for ie or firefox.
I won't make the move any time soon though.

I got my Safari ages ago and whenever I start it it adds another Firefox desktop icon.

If you've tried the latest Safari beta, make sure to patch it with the latest version.

I downloaded and installed the Beta version yesterday...

      Verry impressive...

In addition to what michaewlewis stated, the loading time for pages, IMHO, are actually quite good.  To me, this alone is enough to sell me on it.

As with all beta software, you use them at your own risk...beware security vulnerabilities, however...Apple came out with a quick patch and the browser is still being tested.

      Cosmetically...it's very simple...of course, that's Apple's browser.

It does have one problem...very noticeable...or maybe not.  If I load my forum page in IE or FF, it fits the window fine.  I don't have to scroll right to see the rest of the forum page.  Safari does not load the page correctly and I have to scroll right...just a tad...to see the whole page.

      All in all...a good browser.

Just look at the title of the first one: Who in Their Right Mind Would Run Safari on Windows?

Pretty much sums it up, doesn't it?

Well if MAC users shy away from it why do a Windows version ? ?

As with most things, I'm going to ignore all reviews and try it out for myself.  I have no plans on converting, but I'm definitely curious.  And this would help make it a lot easier for developing sites to be compliant with Safari.

I test everything myself as well on different platforms....

Locked up twice so far on XP...haven't even attempted Vista yet.
