Please help - my old computer has "lost" it's IP address.  I have been walked thru trying to establish a new one but I have been told it is corrupt and has a "WIN sock" error. I am running Windows 2000 NT.  It is "networked" thru this computer with a Linksys wireless router.  After reading some of these postings.  I tried going to "run", then CMD, then IPCONFIG and it comes up with an IP address of 169.254.82.71.  I also tried IPCONFIG/RENEW and it comes back with "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection: Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

The computer has not been used for internet use for awhile, so I just hooked up the wireless router.  My daughter is the "techie" in the house and she is currently at work, so not sure if I hooked everything up correctly.  But I would really like to get an IP address back on the old computer and be able to connect to the internet.

To make matters worse, my CD drives do not seem to be working.  I tried to reinstall Windows and the computer will not read the CD.

Is there anything I can do, short of taking it in to be repaired or replacing it?

Please help,

Thanks,

Did your Internet connection problem start after you "tried to reinstall Windows"?

This has been moved to the "Networking Forum" - IP ADDRESS CORRUPT?

Thank you
hmm... moving it to the Networking section might be a good idea

Go back to the DOS prompt, and try this:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

(Release it first, and then renew it.)
After that, if the problem you are having persists, restart your computer.

If that doesn't work, start your computer again, and unplug the wireless router for 10 seconds, and plug it back in. It should re-check and possibly re-obtain your IP address.

I am using a wireless adaptor.  Please read my other post entitled "IP ADDRESS CORRUPT?" to get more information.  I am in a Catch 22 situation.

Have you ever had any experience with a "WIN sock" error?  I am hoping that I can get that fixed without internet connection.

OR, if I could get my CD drives working, I could get the wireless adaptor to work and then I would have the internet on that computer.

Otherwise, I would have to unhook everything on this computer and hook that computer up to the cable modem.  Then unhook it again to get back on the internet here.  I am willing to do that if it would fix the problem.  But do I NEED the internet to fix the IP address problem???

What I don't think you guys understand is that my MAIN problem is the corrupt IP address, secondary is the CD drives not working, so not being able to install the software to get the wireless adaptor to work on that computer.

I appreciate any and all help.

    Thank you.

Having two threads about the same problem is only confusing the issue. Nobody knows what who said and what has been tried. Pick the one you want to use for discussion and lets stick to it.

I agree - that's why I put that this had been moved and gave the title of where to find it.  I am new to this, so not sure what the protocol is.

Please respond ONLY to "IP ADDRESS CORRUPT?"

      Thank you.

I googled like you said but did not find a red cross.  The sites that I went to seem to want me to download a "fix" or install with a CD.  This is a problem on both accounts.

        1) First of all you can NOT get on the internet when you have this corrupt IP address.  The IP address is 169.254.82.71 which the technician at my cable company knew IMMEDIATELY to be a corrupt IP address.  Without a good one, I can not access the internet.  He called it a "Win Sock" error and said it can be fixed but would take some work.  I was hoping someone on here could walk me thru it.

        2) My CD drives are not working (D or E), so I can not re-load Windows or load anything on a CD.  Maybe if someone could walk me thru the CD drive issue and help me fix that, I would be in a better position to fix the IP address.

Anyone out there who can help me with either issue???

        Thanks,

        Karin

Yes, I do have a computer with access to the Net.  This one.  This computer works fine. I am trying to fix my other one.

I went to the site that you suggested and it requires a DOWNLOAD.  I can not connect to the net on that computer without fixing the IP address. :'(

Like I said in my previous post I can NOT download and I can NOT get on the net on that computer.

But thank you for giving me the link.
