How to set up my wired router?
    « on: July 25, 2007, 10:51:55 PM »
I'm new to networking and on a budget.  I bought a used D-Link DI 604 from Ebay and is appears to be functioning however it did not come with the installation cd, so while I have it connected, I cannot connect to the internet with it.  Any suggestions as to how I can get around this without having the installation disc?   ???

Oops, forgot  ;)  It's XP and I've tried running the network connection wizard, but it doesn't work.

Ok try this: Go to start -> run -> type "cmd" -> type "ipconfig"
          Tell us what you get.
BTW: All the IP's you get are internal so it can't harm by posting that. (If you do not want to post it. I can do without them but then you will need to follow some more steps.)
They 'll probably begin with 192.168

I get nothing when I do that.  A dos window pops up for a second, then disappears.

You first have to get to the dos window by going typing Cmd in run.
              If that doesn't work:
You could be in a protected network that isn't like you say (e.g.: I have the same thing in my school.)
              Try to locate Command prompt.
Should be in start -> all programs -> accessories -> command prompt (same as the run command)-> type "ipconfig" there

If you get a message that this is blocked to than I'll have to ask a moderator if I can give you the info how to pass that.

No worries about a moderator, this is my home pc and I'm trying to connect my daughter's pc downstairs using the router.  Anyway, using the cmd command, I was able to get this after typing ipconfig:

                Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

                Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
                IP Address................................ ...:192.168.0.100
                Subnet Mask................................:255.255.255.0
                Default Gateway..........................:192.168.0.1

Type "192.168.0.1" in the Internet explorer this should get you to a control panel of the router. (normally this is PW protected.)
                  Does it work?
Can you set up the router by yourself? if you have a question feel free to ask.
Are you able to connect true the router and is it only your daughters PC that isn't working?(If that is the case then it is a total different problem.

I went through the process and then it tells me to restart the pc, which is a problem.  I have a new pc on order (should arrive in about 2 weeks) and I'll probably have to wait till I get it to really set this all up.  My current one has a problem where it will hang up at the boot screen, sometimes it will boot, sometimes it won't, so until I get my new one I'm leaving it on all the time.  I'll try this process once I get the new one and then let you know if it all works.  Thanks!

^^I've done that, and downloaded the most current firmware, but since I don't have the install cd and haven't installed any drivers, I can't do anything with the firmware file.

My new plan is to set up the dsl modem and router on my daughter's computer and then connect my new computer when it arrives later.  I have the router connected and followed the install instructions I printed from the D-Link site, but when it gets to the screen that says "set PPPoE" it asks for a user name and password and says that they are optional bu may be required by my ISP.  What would they be and how do I find them?  I have Yahoo DSL and its always on, I don't enter a user name or password to get online.  This is really starting to frustrate me.  I've never attempted a home network (or any network) before, and I figured it was a simple thing just to connect the modem to the router and everything would auto detect.  What can I do to fix this?

I've done this as well.  I am able to connect to the internet fine when I connect the modem directly, either to my pc (the old one) or my daughter's, but when I try to go through the router (on either), no luck.  Funny thing though, it always says my network connection is active when connected through the router, but I can't get online.

Skip the firmware update for now and DLoad and install the drivers and or the setup program...
