Programs wont connect to internet even though Im on internet

I had Earthlink dial up and went to Verizon DLS.  I uninstalled Earthlink but an accelerator file will not delete (which Ive tried and the files are "being used by another program").  So when I do connect to the internet I get several earthlink messages that I have to cancel to get onto the internet.  I can browse and do anything on the internet as well as down load programs.  I have downloaded Napster, Epocrates, Google Earth, some games for my son.  But, When I open the files and try to use them, they need to connect to the internet and are unable to.  I get error messages, I have disabled my firewire to see if that helps but I do not know what is going on.  PLEASE HELP!!!!

Try removing the offending file in safemode...
To enter safemode tap F8 repeatedly while the machine is starting before you see the Windows logo.

Thanks, I will try this.  Do you think it will fix the connection problem also?

You need to read up on the Verizon documentation and double-check if it's setup properly.

If the Accelerator came with your Earthlink dial-up, you may want to contact them for removal instructions as well...then follow patio's advice.
