ActiveX problems anyone?
« on: October 30, 2007, 10:19:07 AM »
using IE 7, updated
gmail (or iGoogle) is my homepage, which comes up with me logged in each time i open IE.  For some unexplained reason, recently gmail will not show up and i am required to use their html version to view anything.  i double-clicked the error on status bar and it says something along the lines of "Could not create object", and gmail directs me to a page telling me that activex is disabled.

i'm usually very good at solving problems, but this one i can't.  i tried editing the Internet options using custom level and enabling everything to do with java, activex, or scripting.  turns out none of those seem to be hindering the browser. my computer is clean of viruses/spyware/malware to my knowledge (from updated scans).  I've gone to Add/Remove programs and "uninstall windows components" (unchecked IE) and reinstalled, but it seems that doesn't do a true uninstall.  I've also tried the Reset option under advanced.

None of these helped. Any suggestions? The only thing I can think of that has been done recently is an attempted windows update that keeps failing, but i'd have to get home to my computer to be able to tell which it is. It's whatever the most recent update was from MS, something to do with XML security. My first thought is this update messed it up, but I can't get it to install, and I'm not sure why it won't.

I recall a Run command that you could use with the xp CD in the drive that will fix most anything to do with IE, but i don't remember it; perhaps someone could relay that to me?

Try Firefox, and see, if same thing happens.

You could try re-installing IE7

* Go to Install IE 7 (Click on the Blue link) and download a fresh version of Internet Explore 7.

* Uninstall the version of IE you have installed now, to do so follow these steps:
1 Click Start
2 Click Control Panel
3 Double click Add or Remove Programs
4 Scroll down until you find Internet Explore
5 Then click Change/Remove, and follow the prompts.

** Please Note: If you are unable to see IE7 in Add or Remove Programs follow these steps:
1 Click Start
2 Click Run
3 Type or copy and paste, into the text box:
%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe
4 Then Press Enter **
* Restart your computer.
* Install the fresh version of Internet Explore.

The iGoogle widget from time to time has issues both in Firefox and IE just so you know.
The problem may well be on there end.
I lost it for 3 days last week.
