How many OSes do your computer have?
« on: November 10, 2007, 12:33:24 AM »
It is possible to install multiple OSes on a computer. This is useful to prevent total loss of usability when an OS has broken down. We can also use another OS to take back the data. Although nearly all OSes provide a way to recover them, this is not useful especially in Microsoft Windows. I have install 3 OSes on my machine (Windows XP x64, Windows Vista x64, Fedora 8 x64)

This laptop has Windows XP Pro dual booting (one boot for gaming, the other for general use).
My other PC is constantly being formatted and changed, but usually has anything ranging from Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server, and some variant of Linux, in all weird and wonderful configurations.
It's just for testing purposes, I can get the OSes free from college to help me in my course you see (before anyone starts in about them not being legal).

I can vouch for that Calum. My son got everything free from College
too when he was a undergraduate..

He also got 'Microsoft Visual Basic Enterprise' for 200 USA Dollars.

Something to do with Microsoft and him being in Computer Science.

I have Win 98SE and Win XP Pro installed on the same machine.  Win 98SE may be coming off in the near future; I rarely boot up with it now and, if I do want to look at Win 98SE for some reason, I have an older computer here that has it.

My goal now is get Linux Ubuntu installed on some box, either my main computer with Win XP Pro, or another one.

I have 2.  Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu Gutsy.  Only boot into Windows occasionally to burn a DVD-Movie or to game a bit.  Which is pretty rare, actually.

One might consider me having two operating systems:
Windows Vista
and a Virtual Box running PCLinux, but I dont use it very often.

Resources... Your programs that you own and run take up resources. Vista uses greater amounts of RAM since it has advanced caching features. (So the question should be: "Why didnt XP utilize my resources the way it should?"

Face it, its the year 2007, not the year 2002 anymore. 512MB is outdated, 1GB is overrated. Get 2GB!

Alright, enough already. Come down off your soapbox. :P

If you're talking OSes on virtual machines, I have about ten. :P Some with XP, some have server2003, and even a couple with bsd that I don't use very often.
Usually, I just run BeOS, SuSe, or XP, depending on what I want to do.

      Desktop has 2 OS (WinXP & Win98SE)
      Laptop has 2 OS (WinXP & Win2KPro)
I also run once in a while a Live CD version of Linux's Ubuntu 7.10 to see what's all the fuzz about it. It's kind of cool I like it.
