Very slow system... about every other time i boot
« on: December 13, 2007, 09:44:29 AM »
Sometimes I turn on my computer and it goes really slow, so I turn it off and restart it. Then it's fine. Pretty much every other time I start it up its slow so I don't know why it does that. anyone have a solution?

Do you have many icons show on your right-hand taskbar (include hidden ones)? Also, if you have Zone Alarm Suite or ZoneAlarm firewall installed then it could be the problem. One of my 3 computers, I installed Zone Alarm Suite and it was ver very slow whenever I turn on power and load a program, especially game. It took me 15 - 20 minutes to load from Turn on to loading game (SilkRoadOnline).

      Try this simple steps first.
      1. Clean all the junks from your computer by using Disk Cleanup.
Start ---> All Program ----> Accessory ----> System tools -----> Disk Cleanup.
Disk Cleanup ----- > Select C: or whatever drive you installed OS -------> OK ------- >
          Check all checkboxes ------> OK.

Clean up your drive(s) at least once a week. Don't delete any log file.

      2. Defrag your disk. Make sure you have enough room in your Hard Drive. (At least 50 - 75% Free)
Start ---> All Program ----> Accessory ----> System tools -----> Disk Defragmenter  ------>
Select C: -----------> Click Defragment button.

If the above steps aren't help then download a trial version of Tuneup Utility 2007

      http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/

I hope this program can help you clean up all those dead links that slow down your computer.

If nothing solves the problem then try to remove all icons from the right hand taskbar.

Start ---> Run ----> Enter: msconfig ------> OK ----> General tab: Click "Selective Startup". (Be sure everything there checked and select.)
Startup tab: Uncheck all those checkboxes except anti-virus, spyware, and firewall programs -----> Click Apply ------> OK ---------> Close ------> Restart.

Make sure you are not working on anything in your computer. If you do, Save it, before Restart your computer.

      OK, sir...
No antivirus, no firewall listed. Do you have at least Windows firewall up?
You're putting your computer in a great danger, and I don't want to see your problems again, unless you start protecting your computer.

Open HJT again, put a checkmark next to:
      - O9 - Extra button: Run IMVU - {d9288080-1baa-4bc4-9cf8-a92d743db949} - C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Start Menu\Programs\IMVU\Run IMVU.lnk (file missing)
      Click "Fix checked" button.

Other then that, your HJT log is clean, but you have to remember how much stuff was removed by two other programs.

      Now...

      Download:
      - AVG free: http://free.grisoft.com/
      - free Comodo firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
      - free a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

Disable Windows firewall, IF you had it ON.

      Install three above programs.

      Be good, from now, on.

Not at all. All three, by default, will update themselves automatically every day, to keep your computer safe.
Just make sure, you don't change any settings, preventing them from doing so.
With Comodo, you'll have to be patient, because at the beginning a lot of its pop-ups, asking you for some permissions. Comodo will learn, and with time, you'll see less, and less pop-ups.

It doesn't matter, slow, or not. You have to be safe. If you'll keep getting more crap, because of no protection, your computer will be even slower.
Now, let's clean it little bit more...

      1. Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/

      2. Read CCleaner instruction from here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleaner

This thread started with a slow machine...i doubt after all that's been done it's actually slower than it was.
Have you considered adding some RAM ? ?

This is way excessive. I'm sure, if you look around, you'll find 1 gig for about $70. Check crucial.com.

$70 is still expensive for a kid who has no possible way to get a job or even to earn allowance. anyway, I'm pretty sure that its only getting slower... piece of crap. it seems like its slow every time i turn it on now. like slower than when i first did the firewalls and w/e. i have installed 2 things since then, Firefox and my lil brother did some pirates of the Caribbean game.

I took another look at your HJT log, and we may try couple more things, before you go for reinstall.
Lets start with all O24 entries, which may make your desktop look nice, but they're clogging your system for sure.
Open HJT, checkmark all O24 entries, click on "Fix checked" button.
Restart computer, and I'll have more options for you.

Run HJT again, and checkmark these:
        - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD08] c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\{33D6CC28-9F75-4d1b-A11D-98895B3A3729}\hphupd08.exe
        - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPBootOp] "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Boot Optimizer\HPBootOp.exe" /run
        - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
        - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
        - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
        - O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
        - O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
        - O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
        - O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe (User 'Default user')

(If you don't use any other language, but English, in Office XP, check the above THREE entries, as well; to prevent ctfmon.exe from being a startup, you need to disable it; here it's how: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282599)
        - O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SUPERAntiSpyware] C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe
        - O4 - S-1-5-18 Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Pics-n-such\stuff\moosik\LimeWire.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
        - O4 - .DEFAULT Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Pics-n-such\stuff\moosik\LimeWire.exe (User 'Default user')
        - O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Pics-n-such\stuff\moosik\LimeWire.exe (User 'Default user')

Remember, by checking the above entries, we don't uninstall any of them, we just prevent them from running as startups.

        - O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'Default user')
        - O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
Narrator is a light-duty screen reader utility packaged with Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. Narrator reads dialog boxes and window controls in a number of the more basic applications for Windows.

Do you use it? If not, ckeckmark the above two entries, as well.

Restart computer. Post new HJT log.

        Download Combofix.exe(http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe) to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe, and follow the prompts.
A window will open with a warning. Type "1" (and Enter) to start the fix.
When the scan completes it will open a text window.
Please attach that log back here together with a fresh HJT log.
Caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Combofix will automatically save the log file to C:\combofix.txt

        Go Start>Run, type in:
        regedit
        Click OK.
        Registry editor will open.
Go File>Export, and save your registry to known location.
        Now...
        Navigate to:
        HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components
You'll see numeric subkeys starting, in your case, with the number 10, like this:
        HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\10\
        HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\11\
        HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\12\
        ...up to 29
Right click on each numeric subkey (10-29), and click Delete

        Restart. Post new HJT log.

        Nice  ;D
Did you follow instructions from here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282599
to prevent ctfmon.exe from starting, because I still can see it:
        - O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

How is your computer doing overall?

After all these changes, you may want to run CCleaner again.

        I'm glad.

        Go Start>Run, type in:
        msconfig
        Click OK.
        Click Startup tab.
See, if ctfmon.exe is there. If so, uncheck it.
This is actually very minor issue, but it'd be nice to get rid of it.
